Monaco Coach Corp. reported its profit margin narrowed dramatically during the second quarter due to competitive wholesale market conditions. The company reports its earnings declined 51% during the three months ended June 30 to $5.5 million while its sales revenue slipped 1% to $223.4 million. The retail sales of towable RVs were down sharply in May, when compared with May 2000, according to Statistical Surveys Inc., an independent market research firm. Here is how the individual product categories performed: Travel trailer sales fell 19.2% to 9,776 units retailed during May. e-commerce firm rvseek Inc. will shift the primary focus of its industry portal, rvseek.com, in August from dealers to campgrounds, according to Matt Dittrich, president of the Bend, Ore., company. Canada’s Glendale International Corp. reported its second fiscal quarter earnings more than doubled despite a 4% decline in total sales and an 11% drop-off in RV sales revenue. The company earned $2 million (Canadian) during the three months ended June 1, compared with $800,000 (Canadian) earned a year earlier. One Canadian dollar now is worth a little less than 65 cents in U.S. currency. Germany’s DaimlerChrysler AG, parent of diesel pusher chassis supplier Freightliner, returned to profitability during the second quarter. DaimlerChrysler reported a net profit, excluding one-time-only items, of 535 million euros, down 70% from 1.75 billion euros earned a year earlier. Winnebago Industries Inc. increased its lead in terms of combined Class A and Class C motorhome retail market share during May, the company announced. Ford Motor Co. recently announced it will sell the 23 car dealerships that it owns in Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City and Rochester, N.Y., by the end of this year. The move by the No. 2 automaker should calm the nerves of RV dealers who were worried that major RV manufacturers might eventually follow Ford’s lead and buy RV dealerships. The retail market for Class A and Class C motorhomes remained sluggish during May, according to data gathered by Statistical Surveys Inc., an independent market research firm. Drew Industries Inc., parent of RV industry supplier firms Lippert and Kinro, reports its RV industry-related sales revenue and operating earnings increased during the second quarter despite the soft wholesale market.
