Freightliner Sees “Good” Fourth Quarter

Diesel pusher chassis supplier Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. has had an up-and-down 2001, but a company executive believes the trend now is heading in an upward direction.
“We started out the year strong,” said Dean Schaper, product manager for motorhome chassis for the Gaffney, S.C.-based firm. “About March, we saw it drop way off. April was slow, and May and June started to pick up.
“July was good,” said Schaper, who was interviewed during the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) rally in Oregon earlier this month. “August got better and, now, we
are looking for a good fourth quarter.”
During the first half of this year, wholesale deliveries of gas and diesel engine Class A motorhomes were down 27.8%, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA). Consequently, Schaper wasn’t forecasting a dramatic turnaround.
“I’m just saying that we are seeing wholesale diesel chassis orders increase right now,” Shaper continued. “It’s a good sign that things are turning around and picking up again. And it’s across the board (as far as chassis types), from the low all the way to our highline.”
