TL Directory Revamps Rating System

The TL Directory, the most widely recognized and used campground rating system in the country, recently adjusted its campground ratings system to address the changing needs of RVers.
The RV industry is experiencing a trend toward the purchase of larger rigs, more motorhomes, more Internet usage and other 21st century amenities at campgrounds. To reflect these changes and needs of the consumers it serves, the TL Directory rating system is adding criteria to its current three-part rating system. The current TL Directory system is a unique three-part method of rating campgrounds. The campgrounds are rated on a 1-to-10 scale for three attributes: facilities, restroom construction and cleanliness, and visual appeal.
“This is an exciting time for the RV industry as we are seeing substantial increases in both RV ownership and rentals,” says Joe Daquino, Affinity Group, Inc.’s (AGI) Multimedia Division president and TL Directory publisher. “In response to consumer demand, we performed market research with the help of campground owners and active RV customers to help us determine how the system could be adapted. The result is an improved system that gives credit for things like phone line availability for modem hookups and the ability to accommodate bigger rigs.
“Refinements were also made in visual appeal to make it more objective and easier to understand,” Daquino added.
The upgraded system will not be in place until 2004 for the 2005 Directory to give the campgrounds time to review the changes. This year, the TL Directory, published by AGI’s TL Enterprises Inc., will use both systems in the field so campground directors can see the impact of the upgraded system. It also gives the TL Directory publisher an opportunity to check for consistency between both systems.
The TL Directory has a searchable database of more than 1 million RV Park Sites, modem-friendly locations, local tourist attractions as well as a pre-inspected and rated campground index for the US and parts of Canada and Mexico. It is circulated to 300,000 paid customers annually. Additionally, the TL Directory is available on CD-ROM and online.
