Six RVs in the inventory of Allsport RV Center, located near Fayetteville, N.C., were destroyed during a severe thunderstorm Sunday night (May 25), according to the Fayetteville Observer.
The storm hit the Allsport RV between 10:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. Monday. The dealership is on U.S. 301 near the Cumberland County Crown Center, the newspaper reported.
Winds from the storm reached at least 80 mph, forecasters said, and tossed six travel trailers several yards. A security fence and telephone poles stopped the trailers. The overturned travel trailers weighed up to 12,000 pounds, the Observer reported.
The storm also destroyed three storage buildings and damaged 29 other travel trailers at Allsport.
“It’s a wonder things didn’t end up in Raleigh (130 miles north),” said Tom Nicholson, a salesman at Allsport RV.
“It sounded like a train coming through the back door,” said Coty Reece, a mechanic at a nearby used car lot. “Next thing we saw were the RVs and trailers flying across the field. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.”
Reece called 911, but he said operators told him he was overreacting to the high winds.
Annette Autry, owner of Allsport RV, said trespassers have picked through items spilled from the destroyed storage buildings.
She said she has filed a police report.
“People see a disaster area and think everything is free,” she said. “I’m just thankful that the devastation was no worse.”
