Brad Herzog of Pacific Grove, Calif., and his wife Amy, took off on their third extended trip on behalf of the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) recently – this time with two young children in tow instead of a car.
RVIA’s “Around the World … In an RV” tour, featuring the first trip for sons Luke, 21/2, and Jesse, 1, was the subject of a recent feature article in the Sacramento Bee.
Herzog, a former newpaper reporter, and his wife participated in the RVIA public relations initiative with RVIA-sponsored trips in 2000 and again in early 2002. The family this year is touring in a 33-foot double-slideout Winnebago Adventurer, gas-powered, Class A provided by Winnebago Industries Inc., Forest City, Iowa.
Herzog authored “States of Mind,” a 1999 travelogue about an RV journey through 18 small communities named for virtues, including Faith, S.D., Wisdom Mont., and Inspiration, Ariz. A second RV-themed book, “Small World,”{ due out in May, will feature cities he visited with worldly names such as Athens, Ga., and Mecca, Calif.
Herzog also has written a dozen books for children, in addition to feature articles for Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated For Kids,
Writer’s Digest, Via, Delta Airline’s Sky magazine and US Air’s Attache.
Sales of “States of Mind” took off when Herzog won $64,000 on ABC’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” and mentioned the book in conversation with host Regis Philbin.
This year’s tour included stops at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Hannibal, Mo., the setting for Mark Twain’s Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer books, and the Field of Dreams in Iowa, where he will meet his father.
