Towables Retail Red Hot in February

The retail market for towable RVs was red hot in February with travel trailer sales increasing 23.6% and fifth-wheel sales expanding by 33.3% when compared with February 2003, according to Statistical Surveys, an independent market research firm. Monaco’s Profit Nearly Triples

Monaco Coach Corp. reports its net earnings nearly tripled during the first quarter of this year, when compared with the first quarter of 2003, which was relatively weak, especially for diesel pushers, because of low consumer confidence due to the build-up towards the eventual invasion of Iraq. Spartan’s RV Chassis Sales Increased 16%

Despite a 16.4% increase in motorhome chassis sales during the first quarter, Spartan Motors Inc., reports its net earnings during the first three months of this year declined by 49%. Spartan’s earnings plunged to $1.3 million during the three months ended March 31, compared with $2.6 million during the same period a year earlier, because of the net loss incurred at its firetruck and emergency vehicle operations. Samsung Microwave Recall Expanded

Samsung Electronics, in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), has announced an expansion of its recall of microwave ovens installed in RVs sold in the U.S. during the past three years. Samsung has determined that some of the microwaves may present a safety hazard because of a defective part that may cause them to begin operation unassisted and result in smoke or fire. Featherlite Inc., a manufacturer of specialty aluminum trailers, transporters and a converter of Prevost bus shells, reports it earned $1.2 million during the first quarter, easily wiping out the $677,000 net loss it incurred during the first three months of 2003. Jayco Inc. has increased its output 40% so far this year over the first part of 2003 by concentrating on its “core businesses,” towable RVs and Class C motorhomes, according to Derald Bontrager, president and COO. It has taken longer than expected, but Drew Industries Inc. now believes it will complete the acquisition of West Coast towable RV chassis supplier Zieman Manufacturing Co. in about two weeks. Drew, parent of RV industry supplier firms Lippert Components and Kinro, announced its plan to buy Whittier, Calif.-based Zieman about a month ago. Highline diesel pusher manufacturer Country Coach reported record sales volume during the first quarter of this year, its parent company, National RV Holdings Inc., reported today (April 27). Manufactured housing and RV industry supplier Patrick Industries Inc. reports its first quarter net loss narrowed to $522,000, when compared with the $900,000 net loss it incurred during the first three months of 2003. Demand Still Strong for Fiberglass Reinforced Panels

The demand from RV builders for fiberglass reinforced panels was strong during the first quarter and is expected to stay that way during the balance of this year, according to the Crane Co., parent of Kemlite, which supplies Filon-brand fiberglass reinforced panels. Crane also owns Lampro of the United Kingdom, which supplies fiberglass reinforced panels to European caravan builders.
