SylvanSport Go Popup Doubles as Toy Hauler
SylvanSport Go, an unusual, 700-pound folding camping trailer with SURV aspects that the developer calls a “backpack on wheels,” makes its debut at the Outdoor Retail Show, Aug. 7-12, in Salt Lake City.
“We set out to create a trailer for the active outdoor enthusiast,” said Thomas Dempsey, president of SylvanSport LLC, Cedar Mountain, N.C., who characterized the vehicle as a “super-mini toy hauler.”
Resembling a popup camper, the 9-foot SylvanSport Go sleeping area consists of the roof assembly that raises in the camping mode to allow twin plastic pods on each side to drop down and swing out.
Two travel positions allow cargo, such as a single ATV or as many as a dozen kayaks, skis or camping gear, to be carried on the floor of a “highly engineered,” open-sided, tubular aluminum frame that also serves as the foundation for the twin or king-bed sleeping platform.
“It’s radically different from the current paradigm,” said Dempsey, a former product designer for Fleetwood Enterprises Inc. who most recently owned a kayak company. “The popup camper hasn’t changed much over 40 years, except for incremental improvements. We wanted to reset the entry-level bar and who it is aimed at.”
Expected to go into production in the fall, the SylvanSport Go will retail for about $5,000, and be available through outdoor recreation retailers and select RV dealers.
