Tiffin Motorhomes Inc., will begin producing its Allegro Bus diesel pusher on a new, proprietary PowerGlide chassis that it will manufacture at its Red Bay, Ala., factory.
General Manager Tim Tiffin said the 34,600-pound GVWR PowerGlide is a step toward “one-stop service” for Tiffin customers.
The new chassis is being shown to dealers during Tiffin’s annual dealer meeting July 26-28 at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld in Orlando, Fla. The company said it will initially offer the chassis on its 40-foot Allegro Bus coach. Plans are to make it available on tag axle coaches by the end of the year, which would complete the Allegro Bus line.
Tiffin told dealers Friday morning (July 27) that development of the chassis has been in the works for three years, and that a primary company goal has been “to develop motorhomes in conjunction with our own chassis.”
Tiffin said it has renovated production and warehouse facilities in Red Bay to accommodate construction of the PowerGlide, which will be equipped with an 8.9-liter, 425-hp Cummins ISL diesel engine and an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission with two overdrive gears and a keypad electronic shifter with digital readout. The raised-rail PowerGlide also features a Vansco multiplex electrical system, full air brakes with automatic slack adjuster and four-wheel ABS, Jacobs compression engine brake, direct-drive cooling system, two-speed clutch and 55-degree wheel cut.
Gary Harris, PowerGlide assembly operations manager, said Tiffin expects to produce one PowerGlide a day by September. Tiffin’s current overall production is 13 motorhomes a day.
Tiffin spent $100,000 to purchase a dynamometer for the PowerGlide assembly line to test engines at full load. “We should be able to identify and prevent any problems with each chassis before it advances beyond our operation,” Harris said. “The dynamometer also provides us with a platform for testing new products and designs.”
Tiffin, founded in 1972, produces gas- and diesel-powered Allegro, Allegro Bay, Phaeton, Allegro Bus and Zephyr Class A motorhomes.
