Winnebago, Itasca Owners Celebrate at “WITStock”
For the hundreds of thousands of people that were there – and the millions afterward who saw the movie documentary or listened to the music – the weekend of Aug. 15-17, 1969, will forever be connected with a small, bucolic farm pasture outside Woodstock, N.Y., and “Three Days of Peace and Music.”
Far fewer members of the Winnebago-Itasca Travelers (WIT) Club attended the first-ever Winnebago Travelers Rally in Forest City, Iowa, held that same weekend – but there’s a difference greater than attendance between the two events.
The RVers keep coming back.
Now known as the “Great National Rally,” the 40th anniversary of the first national WIT get-together will be staged July 19-24 at the rally grounds across from Winnebago Industries’ Forest City headquarters. And, in a nod to the more legendary “happening” from that same weekend four decades past, the theme of the program will be a flower-powered “WITStock.” This time around, more than 2,800 people are expected to attend.
“Since the first WIT GNR and Woodstock were both held in 1969, we felt it was appropriate to celebrate with the theme,” said WIT General Manager Doug Formanek. “We’re going to take you back to the time of Woodstock, the first man on the moon, hippies, The Beatles, long hair and mini-skirts.” The event’s theme also will be reflected in a contest for best state decorations and a parade where members are encouraged to “come out dressed in your favorite 1960s outfit.”
Other events include the first-ever “Happy Camper Cookoff,” a classic car cruise on the grounds, a talent showcase (“Woodstock-era acts highly encouraged this year!”), arts and crafts, special tours at Winnebago’s Forest City facility, lifestyle and technical seminars and nightly entertainment.
“While the economy is certainly challenging, WIT members aren’t changing their lifestyle,” said Formanek. “We anticipate a total of 1,225 (coaches) for our week-long event.”
Membership into the WIT Club is open to any owner of a winnebago Industries motorhome. For more information, go to www.winnebagoind.com/clubs/wit.
