Heartland’s MPG Line Enters Teardrop Market

2011_MPG_Ext03Heartland Recreational Vehicles LLC enters the lightweight teardrop travel trailer market with the retro-styled MPG line set to debut at the 47th Annual National RV Trade Show in Louisville, Ky. The MPG will initially include four floorplans, available in 18- and 20-foot lengths, featuring two tent-end models and two units equipped with single slideouts, according to a news release. The teardrop line is one of four brands to be introduced in Louisville that will showcase Heartland’s all-new high-gloss platinum fiberglass exterior. “The MPG blends a very contemporary look, created by the platinum exterior, with a distinctly retro design that is one of the draws for teardrop trailers with consumers,” said Brad Whitehead, national director of travel trailer sales for the Elkhart, Ind.-based manufacturer. The eco-friendly MPG is available in four colorful exterior graphics packages, each sporting individual icons depicting the active lifestyle of the youthful target demographic. MSRP’s start at around $14,000. Typical of teardrop trailers, all MPG models have a dry weight of less than 2,700 pounds, allowing the units to be towed by most crossover vehicles and smaller SUV’s. Heartland achieves the lightweight status without sacrificing structural integrity, employing aluminum-cage-construction and fully laminated sidewalls and floor. Key features for the MPG include a two-tone interior, chestnut maple kitchen cabinetry with a mocha maple accent, along with an AM/FM radio with CD and DVD players.

    I have 2 questions. The first is where the closest Heartland dealer with MPG’s is to the Ontario Canada Border – we are near Kingston, Ont. approx one hour from Watertown, New York. The second is what are the dates for the Louisville, Kentucky RV show?

    Forest River has a unti that is very similar to this, the R POD and those are available right now!!

    The MPG will give the R-pod a run for the money. It is better built and the interior much improved. You can find good photos at the Heartland web site or at this web site

    Heartland’s MPG product is an exact duplicate of Forest River’s r-pod, floorplan by floorplan. They may have styled it a bit differently, but their goal was to knock-off the industry leading and best-selling micro/mini trailer in the industry (neither are really “teardrops”). r-pod continues to build 15-20 units a day while Heartland has only built a handful due to production delays, supplier shortages, and legal troubles from copying so closely (knock-offs are common in the RV industry, but this was even more obvious than usual).

    The MPG does have a lot of knock-off floor plans – but that is nothing new in the RV industry – Forest River has plenty of their own trailers that are copies of other RV manufacturers. The dark horse in this race is the Gulf Stream Visa – it is bigger, as better interior styling and uses newer, lite weight composites. It comes in around 2400 lbs and adds 25% more interior overall room … including a walk around queen bed. has some good photos – Gulf Stream just updated their web site as well …
