Caravan Salon, the world’s largest RV show held annually at the Dusseldorf (Germany) Fairgrounds, kicked off today (Aug. 27) amid optimism throughout Europe’s RV industry that the continent is recovering from the global economic downturn. Some 160,000 people are expected to pass through Caravan Salon’s gates during the 10-day run that ends Sept. 5. ”The demand from exhibitors was so high that we were able to post moderate growth (in floor space) once again,” Joachim Schafer, managing director of Messe Dusseldorf (Dusseldorf Fairgrounds), said today during a press conference. Schafer reported that 120 of the approximately 135 European towable and motorhome brands are represented at 2010 Caravan Salon along with ”all notable” accessories suppliers and basic vehicle manufacturers. ”The exhibitors have come to Dusseldorf with a multitude of ideas,” he added. ”We will be able to experience several new vehicles, and I’d like to think that Caravan Salon will not only make the current trends visible, but also provide important (insight) for the entire industry.” As in the U.S., European manufacturers are increasing their focus on building ”green” products made of lightweight, environmentally friendly materials that provide higher fuel economy. ”Our industry is working toward responsible environmental stewardship and continuous ongoing optimization of its products with a view to achieving long-term environmental sustainability,” said Hans-Karl Sternberg, director general of the German RV association Caravaning Industrie Verband (CIVD).
