A fire destroyed the main campground building early Sunday at Jellystone Campground east of Austin, Minn., the Rochester Post-Bulletin reported.
Fire officials continue to dig through the debris today as they try to determine the cause and give a dollar estimate on the loss.
Deputies responded about 4:30 a.m. to find the campground’s main building engulfed by fire. Firefighters form Dexter, Grand Meadow, Brownsdale and Adams responded to the scene. The campground is 8 miles east of Austin on Interstate 90.
Campers were evacuated if they were in the direct path of flames and smoke. No one was injured. The fire was finally put out about 10 a.m. Sunday.
Russell Pate, who officials described as the person in charge at the campground, said the fire started in the kitchen area, but said all appliances had been shut off. No one was inside the main building at the time.
Officials said Pate tried to the fire out, but it grew too fast and firefighters were called.
The building has a restaurant, gift shop, laundry area and restrooms. All were destroyed, officials said.
The state fire marshal was called and spent the day at the site on Sunday.
Officials said the owners, Ken and Tammy Westrich, were expected to return Sunday night.
The business, formerly named Beaver Trails RV Park, became a Jellystone Park in 2009. In 2010, the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce named it the New Business of the Year.
