Travel Lite’s ‘Idea’ Trailer to Launch in Louisville

Known for a 15-year run as a quality truck camper builder, Travel Lite Inc. will officially mark its entry into the ultra-lightweight travel trailer marketplace with the launch of the “idea” line during the Nov.29-Dec.1 National RV Trade Show in Louisville, Ky.
Dustin Johns, vice president of the New Paris Ind.-based builder, explained that the motivation to move out of the company’s comfort zone was twofold.
“The ultra-lightweight market has been one of the fastest growing segments in the industry for the past couple of years,” he said. “We felt that we could design a trailer that would stand out. We earned a reputation as a company that always went a step above in the truck camper sector, and it looks like that is translating to the trailer market.”
Johns said simple logistics also played a part in the decision. “Our facility lends itself to the ultra-lightweight product,” he said. “Our truck campers run a certain length, which is about the same as our ‘idea’ trailer, so we didn’t have to make that many adjustments to accommodate another smaller size product line.”
Travel Lite “began the process” in August, then went into full production on the “idea” several weeks ago. Along with its signature truck campers, the company will be showing three 15- to 17-foot trailer floorplans in Louisville – the dry weight of the 15-footer is 2,550 pounds – sporting gel coat fiberglass sidewalls on a lightweight banak wood substrate.
Johns noted the emphasis for the “idea” was efficiency, highlighted by a molded front cap that incorporates the LP units into the trailer. “The front cap is extremely aerodynamic, which will increase gas mileage,” he said. “We were able to accomplish the design because we have our own fiberglass shop and can create some unique molds.”
The molding process is also used to make the “handmade Granicote” countertops on the interior of the trailer, complemented by the trailer’s upscale cherry cabinetry. “We went high end across the board,” Johns said.
Travel Lite has already received orders for the “idea” trailer and is hoping to add to its backlog in Louisville. While the firm is focused on making a name in the highly competitive ultra-lightweight market, Johns said there is another incentive for generating sales.
“We partnered with Habitat for Humanity and are donating money for every travel trailer that is sold,” he said. “It’s a great cause and our involvement shows our support for the things that the organization does along with all the volunteers.
“RVs represent a luxury, serving as a second home for most people. By helping Habitat for Humanity, we can give a hand to those that can’t afford a first home.”
Travel Lite will be displaying its product in Booth No. 5305 in the West Wing of the Kentucky Exposition Center (KEC). For more information visit www.travellitecampers.com.
