SSI: Canadian Towable Sales Drop 6.1% in July
Year-over-year Canadian retail sales of towable RVs declined 6.1% in July and edged down 1.5% for the first seven months, according to the latest report from Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI). The Grand Rapids. Mich.-based firm noted that the provinces of British Columbia and Ontario are incomplete for the month and data was unavailable for Quebec.
A sector-by-sector breakdown shows:
• Sales in the travel trailer sector fell 6.4% in July and were flat for the seven months, up 0.1%
• Fifth-wheel sales rose 3.4% for the month but were down 0.8% year-to-date.
• Folding camping trailer registrations dropped 24.6% in July and 18.3% for the seven months.
• Recreational park trailers declined 32.7% for the month and 21.7% year-to-date.
Thor Industries Inc. was the overall Canadian towables sales leader through July with a 34.2% market share, followed by Forest River Inc. (17.6%) and Jayco Inc. (17.1%).
Thor was also the leader in travel trailer sales for the seven months with a 33.5% market share. Jayco was No. 2 with an 18.7% share, followed by Forest River with a 16.5% share.
Thor held a commanding lead in the Canadian fifth-wheel sector through July, capturing a 45.5% market share, with Forest River at No. 2 posting an 18% share followed by Jayco at 8.9%. Thor was also No. 1 in park model sales with a 42.6% share followed by General Coach (14.9%) and Forest River (13.8%).
Forest River led folding camping trailer sales for the seven months with a 30.7% market share while Jayco posted a 30.5% share and Forest River’s Coachmen RV division held an 16.7% share.
