Attending to heightened demand in the motorhome sector coupled with expansion into new market segments, Oregon-based Coach Glass and its sister company RV Glass Solutions moved operations in early April to the former Monaco Coach Corp. headquarters in Coburg.
The company is fashioning Monaco’s expansive office area and primary manufacturing facility – encompassing a combined 162,000 square feet – to accommodate its glass replacement business. Coach Glass, established by John Tokatly in 1995, is a key supplier of windshields at the OEM level while 11-year-old RV Glass Solutions works directly with consumers through a network of repair shops in the U.S. and Canada.
The 67-acre expanse is being parceled off by Oregon developer Steve Lee and his wife, Sally, who finalized purchase of the property last June. Lee was the original developer for the Monaco site and also the Holiday Rambler headquarters in Wakarusa, Ind.
“It’s a state-of-the-art facility that gives us the capacity to not only better handle current orders but also allow for future growth,” said Tokatly. “Right now, we’re the only company in the complex, but I understand that Steve has a lot of deals in the works.”
Tokatly told RVBUSINESS.com that Coach Glass has “grown steadily” over the years, jump-started by the opening of four warehouses between 1999 and 2002 strategically located in Phoenix, Lakeland, Fla., Elkhart, Ind., and the company’s previous home base in Eugene, Ore.
“The warehouses service both the OEM side and our consumer business,” he said, noting Coach Glass and RV Glass Solutions currently employ 75 workers. “It allowed the company to go national and also provided an avenue to penetrate new markets. Coach Glass is now a supplier to just about every segment in the automotive industries, including fire apparatus and transit coach. Quite frankly, that’s was a lifesaver when the RV industry bottomed out.”
The decision to enter the consumer aftermarket for windshield replacements was also key.
“Consumers are able to call an ‘800’ number when they have a problem,” said Director of Marketing Carol Taylor Clay. “We are partnered with 2,500 service shops across the U.S. and Canada, and can direct them to the closest center and ship their glass. We also take care of insurance and billing so the customer can get back on the road.
“The fact that we’ve been in the business all these years is another big advantage,” she added. “We have a huge inventory, including obsolete and hard-to-find glass. We can ship the correct windshield to the repair shop and then walk them through installation if needed.”
RV Glass Solutions also spawned a side glass business four years ago that addresses a widespread problem in the industry.
“A big issue with RVers is foggy side windows,” said Taylor Clay. “The seal gets compromised for a variety of reasons and the windows eventually become unsightly. We supply RV dealers with replacement insulated glass units (IGUs) as opposed to just installing new glass. This is a service that we’re providing to customers at our Phoenix and Coburg locations and also selling on a wholesale basis across the nation.”
