Sun-N-Fun Resort and Campground, Sarasota, Florida’s oldest and best-known recreational vehicle resort and a major tourist destination for decades, has changed hands.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported that Royalty Resorts Co., a company in the United Kingdom that had owned Sun-N-Fun, sold the 178-acre RV park and resort to Arizona’s Carefree Communities Inc., Centerbridge Capital Partners II L.P.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Carefree officials said the ownership change will not affect the look, feel or staff of the resort.

“We believe Sun-N-Fun is one of the top five highest-quality RV resorts in the nation,” said Charles Ellis, Carefree’s executive vice president. “We will continue to operate the resort in the same first-class manner, and hope it will continue to be one of top destinations for RV parks in the country.”

Carefree own 65 RV and mobile home communities across the country and in Canada. In all, its properties contain 13,000 RV slots and 5,000 mobile home sites.

The sale, which closed July 10, included a Niagara Falls, N.Y., RV park known as Sherkston Shores, and the lease on a Kissimmee site, Tropical Palms.

Though neither company would comment on the sale price, the property is valued at $31.6 million, according to county property records.

Royalty Resorts’ five partners, who have owned the property for 25 years, chose to get out of the business entirely, said company president Ian Wilbraham.

“A lot of us are getting older and it was just time to move along,” Wilbraham said. “It is important for us to find a buyer that was the closest fit to us, and Carefree Communities was that buyer.”
