The Fall RV Technician Distance Learning semester begins Sept. 30 with Pre-Delivery Inspections (PDI) followed by Liquid Propane Systems, which starts November 11.
According to a press release, the program, run by Northampton Community College and the Pennsylvania RV and Camping Association(PRVCA), allows students to gain an in-depth understanding of recreation vehicle maintenance with intensive, competency-based instruction.
Students can simply log on to access the lecture notes, hands-on assignments, quizzes and chat with the instructor and other students. The program gives students the flexibility to complete the course from the comfort of their home or dealership without having the expense of traveling to a training facility.
The program is approved by the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) and qualifies for recertification hours. Students receive a certificate of completion successful completion of the course. The program is designed for RV maintenance and sales personnel, service managers, factory field technicians, service representatives, inspectors and those seeking a new, hands-on career in a growing industry.
Those who complete the entire program will earn a specialized diploma from Northampton Community College. Students not wishing to obtain the specialized diploma may also enroll in individual courses as desired. Those who earn the specialized diploma will be prepared to test for the RV Service Technician or a Master Certified RV Service Technician with the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).
Pre-Delivery Inspections: The course runs Sept. 30–Nov. 3 with a tuition cost of $209. Employees of PRVCA members will receive a 50% reimbursement on tuition and textbooks upon successful completion of the course. The course qualifies for 28 RV technician recertification hours.
The PDI is one of the most common tasks associated with a selling RV dealership service shop. All new RVs must be “PDI’d” prior to delivery to the retail customer. Here, the students proceed, step by step, through the process of performing a quality PDI. Troubleshooting and repair techniques are not the focus of this course; rather this course teaches how to actually inspect and test the viability of all components found in every major system. All electrical, LP and plumbing gear, as well as all safety components and add-on accessories are closely inspected and operated.

The second of the three major systems found in recreation vehicles, the LP system is dissected in detail. Since propane is flammable, safety precautions are emphasized right from the start and throughout the entire course. Here, the student studies the properties of propane as well as the types of containers used in the RV industry. Proper procedures for purging, storing and using LP, including the importance of regulation are presented and performed on paper as well as during many Hands-On assignments. RVIA mandated tests are also perfected.
