AM General’s Mobility Ventures LLC said Monday (Sept. 30) that John Walsh has joined the company as vice president of sales and marketing.

Walsh is the former chief executive officer of Vehicle Production Group, which was the previous owner of the MV-1 before the vehicle was acquired by AM General.

“What you have to do is close your eyes and think that this will be the only purpose-built, assembly-line produced wheelchair vehicle of its kind,” Walsh told the South Bend Tribune in a recent interview.

“There’s no one else that builds a vehicle like this. Everyone else takes a van and they convert it.” With AM General now having ownership of the MV-1, the vehicle is even better, Walsh said.

“The MV-1 remains the only purpose-designed-and-built vehicle for individuals confined to a wheelchair, has a proven track record with its current customers and remains in strong demand by the user community.”

AM General, which had been producing the MV-1 for Vehicle Production Group, plans to restart production of the vehicle in the next 45 days. The company lauded Walsh’s experience, which includes more than 20 years in the specialty vehicle industry.

Walsh most recently was with Arboc Specialty Vehicles in Middlebury as the vice president of sales and marketing.

The company believes Walsh’s immediate impact will be felt as the company begins deliveries to a dealer network that will sell and service the MV-1 for individual consumers and fleet customers. Walsh was brought on by Vehicle Production Group to expand its dealer network; he felt that had been accomplished before the business shut down due to financial challenges in April.
