Grand Design RV LLC, entered the international racing circuit Wednesday (Oct. 23) when Robby Gordon picked up a Momentum toy hauler to take across three continents.

“This thing’s going to get us in position to be very comfortable” during the two-week Dakar Rally, said Gordon, who’s made a name for himself on a wide variety of racing circuits for the last 25 years.

From the factory in Middlebury, Ind., Gordon’s Momentum headed for the East Coast, where it will board a boat to Europe. From there, it will go to Argentina, to carry Gordon’s team across the desert and the mountains during the 6,000-mile Dakar Rally, which starts Jan. 5. “It’s going to get some miles put on it,” Gordon said.

During his factory tour and check out of his new toy hauler, he said, “the Dakar is the toughest race in the world.” Gordon reported that he will be driving a custom-built truck in the 2014 rally.

While he’s used RVs during his time on the NASCAR circuit, “We’ve never had a unit like this, that has a workshop area in the back that we’re going to turn into a fabrication area and a machine-shop area. The front will be living quarters so we can be closer to the action. The Dakar Rally is in some remote areas, and this trailer is going to go through some gnarly terrain, for sure.”

Gordon said he asked around and was directed to Grand Design. “They were up to the challenge,” he said.

Don Clark, Grand Design’s co-founder and president, said Gordon is the highest-profile customer he knows of so far for the company, which started production earlier this year and recently delivered its 1,000th unit.

“What’s exciting about it is how he’s going to use it,” Clark said.

“It’s going to be one of the most-traveled worldwide RVs ever made,” he said. “It’s a big day for Grand Design.”
