Blue Dog RV is preparing to open a new dealership to serve what it views as an underserved market in Portland, Ore.
It will be the fourth location for the dealership, which currently operates two stores in Idaho — Post Falls and Hayden — and one in Kennewick, Wash. Blue Dog will move into an old car dealership in Gresham, on Portland’s east side. The five-acre site will offer a full-service dealership and parts operation.
It’s a move that General Manager Jeff Zemp hopes will push Blue Dog up from the third largest travel trailer dealer in the country to the largest. “We’re trying to get that No. 1 spot,” he said.
Serving the Spokane, Wash., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and south-central Washington markets, the dealership was already the top dealer in the Northwest in 2012 based on data from Statistical Surveys Inc. Zemp sees the new market as being able to take Blue Dog over the top.
“Portland was an under-represented market. There were only four or five decent-sized dealers there,” Zemp said. “We think that the acquisition of Portland will put us in a pretty good position to be the dominant player in the Northwest for towables. We don’t do a lot of business in the motorhome market, only entry-level C’s and gas class A’s.”
