Freelance journalist and RVBusiness Senior Editor Bob Ashley recently announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the Indiana House of Representative in the 32nd District, according to a press release.

”My goal is to bring some sanity to the Indiana House that is now controlled by a Republican majority that repeatedly has ignored the needs of middle-class Hoosiers,” said Ashley, who received the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association’s (RVIA) Distinguished Achievement in RV Journalism Award in 2013. ”Repeal of the business personal property tax proposed by the governor is a perfect example. I expect that it will appear suddenly in some form on the GOP legislative agenda in coming weeks and will shift the tax load even further onto local governments that will have to cut services or raise revenue by increasing ”fees,” a favorite Republican way of saying they haven’t raised taxes.”

Ashley also was critical of Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma for the shenanigans he employed trying to pass HJR 3, the proposed constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriages or ”similar” unions.

”Unfortunately, the Republican incumbent the 32nd District is the prime author of this abomination,” Ashley said. ”Aside from the fact that the Indiana Constitution calls for all citizens to be treated equally, approval of the amendment will cost the state millions of dollars to defend in court. Such constitutional clauses in two states already have been declared contrary to the U.S. Constitution by federal court judges.

”Why is Bosma pandering to a small group of party reactionaries to the detriment of a majority of Hoosiers?”

Ashley, 66, of Tipton, covered the Indiana General Assembly from 1977 to 1988 for the Post-Tribune in Northwest Indiana. He was the host of WFYI TV’s Indiana Lawmakers from 1995-1996 and author of the most widely distributed syndicated political column in Indiana in the mid-1990s.

Since 1994, Ashley has freelanced for national trade and recreational magazines from his home.

Ashley, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam and Germany, graduated with a bachelor’s from Indiana University with majors in English, history and political science. He also was an instructor in journalism at IU from 1997-1999.

The 32nd House District includes all of Tipton County and portions of Grant, Blackford, Delaware, Hamilton and Howard counties in north central Indiana.

As an old friend of Bob, I’m happy to see him run for state rep. He probably knows more about government than most elected officials, and he always could see through the BS. Good luck, Bob! And if you see this, Bob, give me a holler.
