Jim Shields

The Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association (RVDA) announced that former RVDA Chairman Jim Shields of Pan Pacific RV Centers Inc., passed away on Thursday (Feb. 13).

Shields served as RVDA chairman from 2006-07 and, until his death, was a member of the RVDA Board of Delegates, and served as co-chairman of the Government Relations Committee. He was also a past director of the Mike Molino RV Learning Center board and a founding member of CalRVDA, serving as president.

In 2013, Shields received the national association’s highest honor, the James B. Summers Award, for consistent and outstanding contribution to RVDA and its members. He was recently named to the 2014 class of the RV/MH Hall of Fame.

Shields was a mentor and friend to many dealers and extremely active in RVDA/Spader 20 Groups. “Jim was an outstanding businessman and one of the great thinkers in the RV industry,” said RVDA President Phil Ingrassia.  “He was focused on continually trying to make things better – at RV dealerships, in the industry, and at RVDA.”

RVDA Chairman Jeff Hirsch noted, “I already miss Jim Shields knowing we won’t share those lengthy conversations about any number of subjects pertaining to our industry, or on a more personal side when we talked about family. Jim had many accomplishments and in years to come he might be looked upon as the ‘Voice of the Dealer.’

“Jim championed so many causes to advance dealers’ rights. He was a true  advocate for fairness and was always willing to lend a helping hand. My experiences with Jim are many and whether it was 20 Group or RVDA, my greatest reflection was he was my friend. Jim and I spent over 20 years together within our 20 group.  Recently, Jim and I spoke and reflected on those times as some of the most memorable we shared.

“We congratulated each other on the fact that we saw a lot of people come and go, and somehow we were able to stick it out.  In other words,  ‘we did good.’  I, like everyone else, am deeply saddened by our loss and yet I’m comforted knowing Jim will always be a part of me and for those that were blessed to be part of Jim’s life.”

Memorial arrangements are pending and RVDA will provide more information to members and the industry when available.

My heartfelt sympathy to Jim’s family, I met Jim in 1989 as a young rep for Fleetwood. Through the years he always made time for me to catch up and discuss things, I learned much about the dealer side of the business from Jim, a very classy guy. Jim conducted business the right way. The RV business lost a true gentleman, he will be missed.

Jim lived 3 houses down from me when we were kids growing up in King City, California. There were many warm, summer nights spent with the all neighborhood gang out playing hide and seek. His Mom was my 3rd grade teacher – they were a nice family and it was a wonderful time to grow up in a small town. Regards to his family.
