It could be the best year for the RV industry since 2007.

At least that was the opinion of one expert after the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) announced Wednesday (June 25) that May shipment totals were the best for May in eight years and the best overall monthly total since March 2007.

“They (shipments) are indeed strong,” said James Ashurst, vice president of communications and marketing for the RVIA. “Right now the numbers are on pace to be at a point we haven’t seen since the recession.”

According to a report in the South Bend Tribune, Ashurst said annual shipments might be able to surpass 2007.

“These numbers are a testament to the lure of RV’ing,” Ashurst said. “The manufacturers continue to make great products that the consumer is drawn to. The consumer is really embracing the RV lifestyle.”

Beyond the attractiveness of the RV lifestyle, a stable economy also plays a role in the resurgence of the RV industry, Ashurst said.

“There certainly has been pent-up demand,” Ashurst added. “You’ve got families looking around the dinner table right now saying the family is not getting any younger. If we’re going to be an RV family, we need to do this now.

“You’ve got families that are empty nesters saying, ‘Now’s the time.'”
