General Motors has become the first Detroit automaker to rate the towing limits of its light-duty pickups under a common standard that all pickup makers agreed to adopt two years ago.
Automotive News reported that in most configurations of the 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the maximum trailer weight ratings were reduced by 400 pounds from the 2014 model year to become compliant with the J2807 standard.
The revised towing ratings range from 6,100 pounds to 12,000 pounds, GM said.
GM released its new towing ratings under the J2807 standard of SAE International on Thursday, June 19. The standard should reduce confusing claims from automakers, at least for light duties. Heavy-duty vehicles are not covered by the standard.
