The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center is hosting the 22nd Annual National African American Recreational Vehicle Association (NAARVA) rally. The rally began Sunday (July 20) and will continue until July 27.

The Shawnee News-Star reported that Wendell Simpson of Alabama, the southern regional director for NAARVA, said it is the largest, if not only, African American RV association in the United States.

NAARVA was established in 1993 and had its first meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio.

National camp rallies are hosted every year during the last full week of July. This is the second time the rally has been in Shawnee, the last time being 2012.

“It’s just a time for family fun and fellowship,” Simpson said.

Rally chair Jimmy Smith, of North Carolina, said there are approximately 260 rigs this week.
