Go RVing & Sports Illustrated Team up Again
The Go RVing Coalition is once again teaming with Sports Illustrated to provide the magazine’s lead NFL writer Peter King with an RV for his Monday Morning Quarterback (MMQB) Training Camp Tour this summer.
RVIA Today Express reported that King along with other Sports Illustrated writers and staffers embarked from New York on July 19 in a Fleetwood Storm motorhome for a three-week RV odyssey that will visit 20 cities. Along the way, King will write and blog about their RV adventures in addition to their normal football reporting on the widely-read MMQB site.
In sharing his thoughts about RV travel in an MMQB column last August, King wrote, “One of the great things about this trip is discovering places we never knew. I’d driven past Chattanooga on the interstate before, but this time, we stopped there for the night between stops at the Falcons and Titans, having a couple of local beers at The Foundry, chowing down at The City Diner, and watching a few inning of the Chattanooga Lookouts game at the nice downtown ballpark,” King wrote in his MMQB column on Aug. 12.
Later in the column he added, “John Madden used to say it all the time, and I am merely copycatting him by saying what a beautiful country this is, and I’m lucky over the past two weeks to be driving through it instead of flying over it.”
Speaking to attendees at Outlook 2014 breakfast at the National RV Trade Show in December about his RV tour, King said that a bad flying experience a couple years ago – one that prevented him from getting from one NFL training camp to another in time to write his story – got him thinking about using an RV for his annual visits to NFL training camps. Last year’s tour in a Jayco motorhome arranged by Go RVing covered 11,269 miles in 31 days and whetted King’s appetite for more.
It also piqued the interest of NFL players and coaches. “When I visited the Colts training camp, I talked with Andrew Luck and Chuck Pagano at the motorhome,” King said. “They both wanted to look inside and said this was how they wanted to travel. In Minnesota, Adrian Peterson sat behind the wheel and talked about how he wanted a motorhome for himself and his family.”
King is one of America’s premier pro football writers and his MMQB column on SI.com, which began in 1997, has become a must-read for fans, league insiders and anyone who loves the NFL. The column regularly draws more than 12 million page views, and based on its popularity, Sports Illustrated and King expanded the column to a stand along microsite on SI.com. He has over 1 million Twitter followers and he will be tweeting constantly during the tour as well.
