Bob Martin knows he’s living the American dream. Although the Bristol, Indiana, native still resides within a stone’s throw of where he grew up, he now sits at the helm of recreational vehicle giant Thor Industries. Ask him the secret of how he ascended the corporate ladder from an entry-level sales associate to president and CEO of a $3 billion company, though, and the answer might surprise you. Hint: There was opportunity, but very little luck involved.
“For me, it definitely started with high school sports and on into playing football at Purdue,” says Martin. “You’re there to be part of a team, with the end goal of winning games. That transfers right into business. You work together as a team to achieve a goal. Many of our most talented people are former athletes and military members. We have learned to work together for a common goal.”
It’s that team player spirit that helps Martin be so successful in a company made up of eight distinct divisions and brands. From the cool sophistication of Airstream to the family-friendly Heartland pull-behind travel trailers, each subsidiary contributes to the overall success of the whole.
