Dometic Assists on ‘Habitat Build’ For Employee

Mechiel Dues says her granddaughters might be even more excited about the family’s new home than she is.

As reported by the Elkhart Truth, the 51-year-old Dometic employee was joined by about 50 coworkers in the parking lot of the company’s Industrial Parkway plant on Friday (June 16) to get started on the home. Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County approved her for a home after she learned through her church she could apply to the program in 2015.

“It’s a new chapter in my life. This means the world to me,” she said as work crews took a break from the panel build Friday just before 10 a.m. “I’ll be a homeowner – I’m going from paying rent to paying a mortgage.”

Dometic employees prefabricated wood framed walls for the home and disassmbled them in sections. They will be put back together when construction starts in late July on a lot Dues picked near Mary Beck Elementary School, where Dues’ granddaughters are students.

Dues took full guardianship of the girls ages 6, 7 and 8 in 2014, and they’ve been living together in her one-room apartment.

“It’s a quiet and peaceful neighborhood. My grandkids will do very well in there,” she said. “They are very excited. They get their own room. They’re a little bit more excited than I am.”
