Local business and industry chefs will square off again in a cooking competition for charity at the 2nd Annual Bashor Children’s Home “Running with Spoons” Celebrity Chef Challenge on the evening of Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Lerner Theater’s Crystal Ballroom in Elkhart, Ind.

Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. with the competition getting underway at 6:00 p.m. All proceeds will go to support The Children’s Shelter at Bashor and the NEW Girls Intensive Treatment Program. These programs provide help for children who have suffered extreme trauma, such as homelessness, abuse, and victims of human trafficking.

The evening consists of guests sampling each chef’s dish and voting on their favorite with a fundraising app. This year, 15 celebrity chefs are vying for the “Golden Spoon” title. At the end of the evening, time will be called and the chef team with the most votes (dollars raised) is crowned the champion. Gary Sieber will serve as the master of ceremonies.

“You can participate by attending the event or by voting for your favorite celebrity chef remotely,” said Matt Hazelbaker, vice president for Genesis Products Inc., an organizer of the event. “There are no reserved tables and the attire is casual. Just enjoy an evening of mingling, a cash bar, and delicious homemade food.”

Jeff Rodino of Patrick Industries Inc. won the first Bashor Golden Spoon Award at the inaugural “Running With Spoons” fundraiser last year with more than $37,000 of votes. The event raised more than $250,000 for Bashor Children’s Home, the largest fundraiser in Bashor’s 95-year history.

Hazelbaker, explaining the importance of the event, noted that human trafficking is a growing problem in Elkhart County. “Today, trafficking is real and is happening in our backyard,” he said. “We can never prevent this crime, all we can do is be ready to care for, love and provide these kids therapy for this experience.”

Bashor Children’s Home of the United Methodist Church Inc. is a 501 C-3 agency. All sponsor gifts are fully tax deductible and will be issued a thank you letter upon receipt. Receipts for ticket sales and voting donations will be issued via text message at the end of the event. Click here to register or go to!
