Following issuance of its second-quarter earnings Friday (Aug. 11), Camping World Holdings Inc. President and CEO Marcus Lemonis said in a conference call that the company may reopen as few as 40 former Gander Mountain locations, far short of earlier expectations, due to challenges renegotiating leases.

SGBMedia Online reported that Camping World also confirmed that the re-opened Gander stores will be much smaller than its traditional locations and feature significantly less footwear and apparel.

On June 30, Camping World, the nation’s largest RV-retailer, revealed the locations of the 57 Gander Outdoors and Overton’s brand locations it planned to keep as part of its acquisition of Gander Mountain, which filed for bankruptcy in March. The company acquired the rights to the leases in the bankruptcy.

Initially, Camping World estimated it would keep between 60 and 80. The 57-year old business had 126 locations when it filed for bankruptcy.

Lemonis said the current plan is to open the initial 15 to 20 Gander stores by the end of 2017, another 15 to 20 stores in the first few months of 2018, and an additional 10 to 30 during the balance of 2018, “with measured growth anticipated thereafter.”
