Leisurely working on one of several puzzles lined up on a row of tables in front of her, Joanne Bastien of St. Petersburg, Fla., was a study in contentment at the Good Sam 2018 Nebraska State RV Rally Friday (June 8) afternoon.

The Hastings Tribune reported that her husband, Bill, 75, a retired banker, was working hard to keep his stroke count at ladder golf from climbing. These sunbirds have been planning their yearly excursions around Good Sam rallies across the country and into Canada for eight years, using them “as an excuse to travel across the country” for fun and adventure. This year’s rally at Adams County Fairgrounds kicked off June 6 and concludes with a memorial service on Sunday.

“It’s relaxing,” the 72-year-old retired bookkeeper said of the Good Sam lifestyle. “This year, for four months we’ll be out on the road and travel all over, ending up in Maine and going into Quebec City before coming home in October.”

Just exactly where they will stop along the way is hardly a given. But that’s precisely what makes it so much fun, Bastien said. Good Sam rallies are held across the country and in Canada each year, bringing together recreational vehicle owners from all over who enjoy traveling and meeting up others for companionship and shared experiences. Many, including the Bastiens, have come to build their social calendars around them.
