Mike Regan of Crestview RV Center in Buda, Texas, became RVDA’s 2019 chairman during the traditional gavel passing ceremony at Wednesday’s (Nov. 7) annual meeting.

Regan, who started his career in the automotive industry, told convention attendees that although the two industries share similarities, he quickly realized he’d need to adapt to some important differences. In addition to the seasonal cycles of the RV business, there are significant differences in how fixed operations get done in RV dealerships, he said.

“Past chairman Brian Wilkins said he had a dream that one day a dealer could type a unit’s VIN into the computer and have every part it contained pop up on the screen,” said Regan in a press release.  “We need a bill of materials to tell us what’s in that RV.”

Parts are just one element of a larger problem, Regan added. Dealerships also need to make sure they stock the right parts and have enough qualified technicians to take proper care of their customers.

“We’ve all got to take better care of the customer — we’re selling them the first time, but what about the second and third times?” said Regan.  Today’s consumers don’t react well when told it will take weeks for their unit to be repaired. “Today’s buyers have changed–they don’t want to wait, even for a cup of coffee.”

“That’s why it’s so important that RVDA and our industry partners continue to focus on improving repair event cycle time, or RECT,” he said.  “Because if our customers don’t like their service experience, they’re not coming back to us.”

Regan encouraged all dealers to get involved with their DMS providers so the industry can measure progress in shortening the repair cycle time.
