Dealers’ expansion to multiple locations has taken off in recent years, offering business owners the opportunity to streamline back-office operations. According to a press release, an Oct. 3 workshop at the 2013 RV Dealers International Convention/Expo will guide dealers through the critical steps of creating an efficient multilocation business by consolidating operations.
“Consolidating Back-Office Operations for Multilocation Dealer Groups — Lessons Learned from Those Who Have Succeeded,” will be presented by Mercedes Hendricks from the Retail Dealer Group at Crowe Horwath LLC. Hendricks will detail how some dealer groups have attained huge savings and improved efficiencies by consolidating many support functions. The process takes a lot of research, planning and lessons from others on how to overcome the inevitable hurdles. Hendricks will condense these lessons in order to prepare dealers to begin making cost-saving changes when they return from Las Vegas.
The 75-minute session starts at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday and will cover how to start the process, likely impediments and how to avoid them, lessons learned by others, practical methods for streamlined financial reporting, floorplan payoffs and vendor payments. Hendricks will also suggest benchmarks for creating a centralized accounting office.
The convention/expo, sponsored by the Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association (RVDA), RVDA of Canada and the RV Learning Center, takes place in Las Vegas, Sept. 30 – Oct. 4 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. It is the premier education and networking event of the year for North American RV dealers and their staffs.

Employers with more than 50 employees now have a one year reprieve before they must comply with the new healthcare law’s requirement to provide health insurance for workers.
According to a press release, a workshop at the 2013 RV Dealers International Convention/Expo will take on this timely topic and address other deadlines in the new law and ways dealers can prepare to comply with this sweeping reform. “Healthcare Reform: How to Get Ready Now” is one among four sessions that will focus on compliance and spotlight upcoming actions that could threaten dealer financing and complicate employee benefits administration.
More than 30education sessions have been confirmed for the Convention/Expo, and more than 20 sessions feature new RVDA presenters. The Convention/Expo will take place in Las Vegas, Sept. 30–Oct. 4 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino. The theme of the event is “Education: Your Competitive Advantage” and all aspects of the convention are tied to dealership-specific professional development for top dealership personnel.
To prepare dealers and their human resources staff for the next round of healthcare reform deadlines, Kathryn Carlson of KPA will present the workshop on Oct. 2 at 11:15 a.m. Carlson, a human resources expert with 25 years in the field, will review the critical healthcare reform dates, the facts about healthcare exchanges, the individual mandate, and pay or play. Additionally she will help attendees determine whether it’s better to play or pay and also guide them in assessing the role of benefits programs in employee recruitment and retention.
Another hot topic to be addressed is the still simmering regulatory unrest over recent actions by the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB). Two sessions on the morning of Oct. 4 will provide an overview of the many requirements of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA) and explore the relationship between dealers and lenders. Chip Zyvoloski, a senior attorney with Wolters Kluwer Financial Services, will present both sessions. Zyvoloski is an expert in regulations affecting the indirect lending community.
The first of Zyvoloski’s presentations will be a Compliance Super Session at 7:45 a.m., called, “ECOA Compliance 101: What You Need to Know and Why You Need to Care About It.” He’ll underscore the critical importance of compliance and how the CFPB even affects dealers who are not regulated by that body. The session will offer fundamentals for those new to tackling these issues and serve as a refresher course for those more experienced with financial compliance issues.
“CFPB Guidance and Rate Markups: Do You Understand Your Roles and Responsibilities” will be presented by Zyvoloski on Friday at 9:15 a.m. He’ll provide background information to put recent developments in context for attendees and will review the CFPB’s recommendations. Dealers will also learn how to maintain and even strengthen relationships with their lenders in order not to lose out on business.
Dealers in the Rental Track will have a compliance workshop geared toward their unique needs in a session called “Legal Review of 2013-14: How to Comply with 20th Century Laws in the 21st Century.” Leslie Pujo will lead the session at 9:45 a.m. on Oct. 2. Implementing new technology in compliance with existing law is not always an easy task and this workshop will look at conflicts and solutions for issues including state disclosure requirements, electronic agreements, and insurance intricacies.

The Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association (RVDA) reported that booth space for the 2013 RV Dealers International Convention/Expo is close to 70% sold with less than four months to go. According to a press release, only 45 booths remain and half of the vehicle space is taken with six manufacturers signed up to show vehicles on site for the event, set to run Sept. 30–Oct. 4 in Las Vegas at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.
“The trend this year seems to be for bigger booths,” said RVDA Marketing Manager Julie Newhouse. “I have sold four 20-by-20 spaces already. There is tremendous support for this event.”
In addition to the exhibition, nine corporate partners are supporting the convention in 2013. GE Capital is the sole Platinum Partner and Bank of the West and Protective are Gold Partners.
