Woodall Publications Corp. has announced the top-rated, privately owned RV parks and campgrounds in North America through its 5W/5W rating system. Of the 8,000 privately owned parks listed in its 2011 North American Campground Directory, 333 parks earned the highest and most coveted designation in the Woodall’s rating system, according to a news release.
The rating system allows RVers and campers to search and find the top-rated 5W RV parks and campgrounds that meet their travel needs. Campers can identify parks by their 1W to 5W ratings for both park facilities and recreation. The more W’s in a rating reflect the presence of more developments and facilities available at the park. Further, the maintenance of the campground heavily weighs in all park 5W ratings.
Woodall’s field teams conduct on-site inspections of campgrounds in the U.S. and Canada, as listed in the directory each year. The final ratings are a composite of several different areas of interest, including a park’s physical grounds, restrooms, site and road developments, surrounding recreation and superior maintenance of its facilities.
“Privately owned campgrounds and RV parks covet the 5W Woodall’s rating, valuing it as the industry’s long running standard and most respected rating system,” said Joe Daquino, senior vice president and publisher, Affinity Group Inc.’s (AGI) Affinity Media division, the parent company for Woodall’s Publications. “We are very proud of the 333 campgrounds that have achieved a 5W rating for 2011.”
Campers and RVers in a recent survey identified reasons behind buying a Woodall’s directory including the Woodall’s rating system and the comprehensive and accurate information featured in the travel tool. Prior to the 2011 directory going to press, Woodall’s Facebook fans received a sneak peek of the 5W/5W parks for 2011.

About Woodall Publications
Woodall Publications Corp. is a multi-media publisher producing annual directories, a variety of specific-interest books and online publications each designed to reach different segments of the RV and camping consumer marketplace. AGI is the parent company of RVBUSINESS.com.
Woodall Publications Corp. announced today (Oct. 14) that the 2011 Woodall’s North American Campground Directory will be combined with the 2011 Camp Club USA Directory in order to provide a comprehensive listing of campgrounds along with essential information on participating Camp Club USA (CCUSA) parks. Further, the new combined directory — which will retain the 2011 Woodall’s North American Campground Directory name — will be complimentary with every Camp Club USA membership.
The new combined directory will offer a wide range of information for CCUSA members, including detailed state and provincial maps showing participating CCUSA locations along with locator maps of all the nearly 1,200 participating Camp Club USA campgrounds, full park listings, and information on how members can access their CCUSA discounts. The directory also contains ratings of more than 8,000 privately owned parks across North America, ensuring RVers find the most enjoyable and appropriate site for their individual travel plans.
With a distribution of more than 300,000 copies, the directory helps RVers make more informed decisions on selecting a campground and also makes participating campgrounds easier to find, research and book. Each CCUSA campground is featured in the directory on both state/provincial maps and individual campground listings.
“Woodall’s North American Campground Directory and the Camp Club USA Directory are both firmly established as two of the most comprehensive resources available for RVers,” said Joe Daquino, senior vice president and publisher, Affinity Media, the parent company for Woodall’s Publications. “By combining them into a simple, single-volume edition, we have made valuable information on campgrounds nationwide even more accessible. And it’s a great benefit for Camp Club USA members as they now essentially receive two directories in one.”
The 2011 Woodall’s North American Campground Directory will be available in early December at bookstores, RV dealers and Camping World stores. To purchase or receive more information on Woodall’s and its publications, call (800) 323-9076 or visit www.woodalls.com.
With the recreational vehicle industry often leading the nation in and out of economic downturns, economists are watching closely a recent upsurge in wholesale RV shipments as a good sign that the U.S. economy is on the path to recovery. That’s the positive atmosphere in which this year’s 2nd Annual RVBusiness Top 50 Dealer Awards dinner and reception will be held Wednesday evening (Oct. 7) during the Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association’s (RVDA) annual RV Dealers International Convention at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
The awards are presented by RVBusiness, a leading trade journal published by Affinity Media, not only for the demonstrated survival skills of these 50 dealerships during one of the deepest U.S. economic downturns in memory, but also for the continuing commitment of these U.S. and Canadian retailers to professionalism, civic involvement, association activities, best practices and, more than anything else, consumer care.
The RVBusiness staff in August first announced the selections for the second annual Top 50 awards, based on nominations from North American RV manufacturers. A volunteer panel of industry veterans in August then concluded its review of dealer applications in the RV-building center of Elkhart, Ind.
“We had an overwhelming response from our manufacturer nominees this year,” said RVB Publisher Sherman Goldenberg. “The number of applicants received was about 40% more than what we had in 2008. So, before judging even started, we considered this year’s program a success, and that was largely due to the many quality dealerships submitting applications. Because there were so many worthy RV dealers who applied, it was a much more difficult selection process this time around.”
RVBusiness Top 50 dealers are not ranked, although 10 Blue Ribbon retailers are singled out for special recognition and a Dave Altman Award for lifetime achievement in RV retailing and exceptional corporate citizenship will also be presented to one of the Top 50 dealers at the awards dinner.
Former – and possibly future – Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is slated as the keynote speaker at this year’s event. In his current role as a Fox News talk show host, Huckabee in March taped an episode of his “Save Our Town” series in Elkhart, Ind., a northern Indiana city where the U.S. RV business is centered that has garnered more than its share of national media attention this year for the recession’s impact on its businesses and residents.
“Given the current national political climate and the ongoing debate between the two political parties – and the ways in which these debates directly impact the recreational vehicle industry, we consider Mr. Huckabee an excellent and thought-provoking choice for an enjoyable evening in Las Vegas,” said Goldenberg. “And that goes for industry people of all political persuasions – Republican, Democrat, Libertarian or otherwise.”
Underwriting this year’s program are RVB’s “Leadership Alliance” sponsors for 2009, including “platinum” co-sponsors ADP Lightspeed, Salt Lake City, Utah; Blue Ox, Pender, Neb.; Coach-Net, Lake Havasu, Ariz.; Cummins Onan, Minneapolis, Minn..; Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp., Gaffney, S.C.; RV Trader and RVTraderOnline.com, Norfolk, Va.; and Ultra-Fab Products, Elkhart, Ind.; and “Gold” sponsor Protective Asset Protection Division, Chesterfield, Mo.
Tickets for the $120-a-plate dinner ($99 for RVDA members, Con/Expo exhibitors and Top 50 dealer guests) are available at the convention or through the following registration link (http://www.rvbusiness.com/top-50-dealer-awards/2009-registration-form/).

About the Top 50 RV Dealers Program:
The program’s purpose is to showcase credible role models and establish best business practices benchmarks at the retail level of the RV industry in terms of staff training, performing warranty and service work, managing aftermarket stores, superior consumer care and being good citizens of their respective communities. The program was founded and coordinated by RVBusiness magazine with additional support provided by the Leadership Alliance.

By providing information, insights, and resources, the company champions the fun, freedom, and adventure of recreation in motion. The company works to enhance its customers’ recreational experiences and build the communities that share and promote their fun and adventurous lifestyles.
Affinity is organized into four different business units – Affinity Media, Affinity Clubs, Affinity Events and Affinity Ventures. Their corporate headquarters is located in Ventura, Calif. Subsidiary operations and divisions can be found at multiple locations throughout the United States.
As part of a five-year licensing agreement, Boating Industry magazine, a publication of Affinity Group Inc., will be responsible for “the overall creation and development” of the annual Marine Dealer Conference & Expo (MDCE), the annual convention of the Marine Retailers Association of America (MRAA).
Slated for Nov. 16-18, the newly named Marine Dealer Conference & Expo will be held at the Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Fla., a move that numerous dealers suggested in a survey last year, reports Tammy Galvin, a vice president of Affinity Media, publisher of Boating Industry. The more convenient location is expected to generate greater participation from the dealer body.
Boating Industry, a leading trade journal in the marine sector, will work closely with the MRAA convention committee and will assume responsibility for all sponsorship sales and marketing efforts, according to Galvin, who’s based at Affinity Media’s suburban Minneapolis office.
“This partnership will culminate in a must-attend event that – at long last – will bring the seemingly disparate segments of our industry together at just the right time,” said Galvin. “Let’s face it: All segments of our industry have seen an incredible amount of attrition that is likely to continue. It’s abundantly clear to us and the MRAA that the survivors will be those arming themselves with every conceivable best practice available, and that’s precisely what we will deliver.”
A number of boat builders have expressed an interest in incentivizing their dealers to attend the event, which is still in the early planning state, and others are looking to hold downsized dealer meetings there. Likewise, industry 20 Groups are planning to hold their regular meetings on the front and back ends of its educational content.
“Exhibitors maxed out the available space at the 2008 MDCE in Las Vegas, and this year, with the move to the Coronado, companies seeking to display their products and services in front of an even bigger crowd of dealers will find a much larger and more convenient exhibit hall,” a release states. “The Coronado features more than 86,000 square feet of exhibit space, of which the MDCE has more than 58,000 square feet already reserved, a welcome necessity with growing exhibitor interest. In fact, numerous boat builders and other companies are already signing up to showcase their products.”
“RVers spend vast amounts of time in the great outdoors, so it’s only natural that they want to help preserve and improve the environment they enjoy so much,” said Sue Bray, vice president and executive director of the Good Sam Club. “These two initiatives give participants the opportunity to make a real difference for generations of RVers to come.”
More than 9 million people in the U.S. now own RVs. For thousands of RVers, The Rally is the event and vacation destination of the year. The Rally is an annual event hosted by the Good Sam Club, the world’s largest RV owners’ group with more than 1.5 million member families nationwide, along with Camping World President’s Club, Camp Club USA, Coast to Coast Resorts, Woodall’s and Trailer Life and MotorHomemagazines. All the organizations are either owned by or affiliated with Affinity, the nation’s largest provider of outdoor recreation clubs, services, media and events, headquartered in Ventura, Calif.
