The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) mourns the passing of long-time RVIA Board member Al Ruhl of Manchester Tank and Equipment Co., who died Nov.29 in Hawaii.
“Al was a proud and committed RVIA member who demonstrated his strong support through his extraordinary participation in the association,” said RVIA President Richard Coon in a news release. “In addition to his strong leadership and guidance, he was a passionate advocate for LP gas safety, one of our industry’s greatest ambassadors and a friend of tremendous character and kindness.”
Ruhl served on the RVIA board of directors from 1990-2000 and from 2001-2007. In addition, he was an engaged committee member, serving on the Annual Meeting Committee (1990-2008); Supplier Committee (1991-2004, serving as chairman from 1995-1998); Membership Committee (1994-2008, serving as chairman from 2007-2008); Industry Education Committee (1989-2001); Standards Steering Committee (1998-2009); Heating Technical Subcommittee (1986-2009); and RV Propane Systems Textbook Review Committee (2003-2006).
He was also a founding member of the RVDA/RVIA RV Service Technician Governing Board.
Ruhl was the recipient of RVIA’s Distinguished Service to the RV Industry Award, the association’s highest honor, in 2000. He served on the board of directors for the RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2000.
In addition to his RVIA service, Ruhl also served on the Board of Directors for both the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) and the Western Propane Gas Association (WPGA). He was honored with WPGA’s Distinguished Service Award at their convention in Reno, Nev., in May 2010.
“On behalf of a very grateful membership, RVIA extends heartfelt condolences to Al’s family and friends” Coon said. “He will be profoundly missed by our industry.”
A viewing is scheduled for Sunday (Dec. 5), from 4 – 8 p.m. at Treadway and Wigger Funeral Chapel in Napa, Calif. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Napa with internment to follow.
Al Ruhl, an RV industry supplier from Manchester Tank, Brentwood, Tenn., and a 2000 inductee into the RV/MH Hall of Fame, has died.

Ruhl, a resident of Napa, Calif., was a life-long advocate for LP gas safety, long-time active board member of the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), RVIA Supplier Committee chairman and a member of the joint RVDA/RVIA Certification Governing Board.
He was instrumental in developing improvements in gas safety standards such as two-stage regulators, excess flow check valves, overfill protection devices and gas leak detectors for LP cylinders.
He was an active member of the Go RVing marketing coalition. He also was en eight-year member of the National Propane Gas Association board of directors and was on the board of the RV/MH Hall of Fame.
