Owners Don Duncan and Shaun Duncan have an unusual RV firm in Simi Valley, Calif. Read the following Q&A with Shaun Duncan from the Ventura County Star to learn more about their business.

What prompted you to start your own business? I opened an 8-acre RV storage business in Simi Valley in April of 2010 called All Valley’s RV Storage. Many of my storage tenants do not get the opportunity to use their RVs as often as they would like and were interested in renting their RVs. I made the decision to open a rental business and to rent the privately owned RVs stored on our storage lot. This has been a win-win decision. My customers are earning revenue by renting out their RVs and I was presented the opportunity to expand the storage business and the services we provide to our valued customers.

What is your educational and career background? Bachelor’s degree in both marketing and political science, with experience in business management.

How much research did you do before starting your business? I worked on the plan for about six months and I was mentored by a close friend who has operated a similar business in San Diego for more than 20 years.

What were the most helpful sources, including websites? My good friend who has been in the RV rental business and the RV business community. Simi RV has been a very good neighbor recommending us for rentals.

When were you the most discouraged? The first year is a lot of work, but I am not discouraged. I am working hard to build our fleet and advertise our new business.

What company or individual do you admire? We have been impressed by the entire RV business community. This business sector is made up of individuals who are passionate about RVs and the fun they can bring to their owners. I have received a lot of help from others in the business of selling and renting RVs.

What will make your business stand out from competitors? All our units are extremely clean as well as a superb level of customer service that will keep renters happy and coming back.

Who is your target client/customer base? Families who are taking vacations and local businesses who rent RVs for special programs, trips, etc. I have something for everybody, from super luxury Class A coaches to travel trailers, and toy haulers.
