artieheadArt’s RV in Glen Ellyn, Ill., has concluded another successful year, helping thousands of customers enjoy their travel and camping experiences with recreational vehicles. In honor of the 36 years of operation under the Art’s RV banner, they are celebrating with a special sale Aug. 20-23.

Founder Art Swenson took over a small camping and recreation vehicle repair shop in 1959 called Easy Camping. His success repairing popups and travel trailers led to offering sales and consignment sales of many sizes and types of RVs, as well as truck caps and accessories, according to a news release.

Art’s RV, as named in 1974, was reportedly the first and only non-RV selling service center in the country when it was started.

In the spring of 1989 Art’s RV bought the RV rental business from Wheaton Rental and started to rent Starcraft popups. In 1992 they changed the rental fleet from Starcraft to Coachmen, and sold new Coachmen popups. In 2000 Art’s RV started selling Springdale travel trailers along with Cabana expandables. “We are very proud to have been selected by TrailManor to be their exclusive Chicagoland dealer in 2006,” the company states on its website.

Dan Guthrie, who was Art’s service manager, took over directing the business in 1989 and has followed Swenson’s lead.

“We want to go the extra mile to make sure our customers’ experiences are always the best,” Guthrie said. Under his management of the sales, rental and service center with its 10 employees, an estimated 20,000 people walk through the doors annually. “It can be like vacation central in the summer,” he said.

Today Art’s RV is one of the few RV dealerships in Illinois that subscribes to the satellite technician training program.
