Dometic Group’s Tuesday (Sept. 9) announcement of its pending acquisition of Elkhart, Ind.-based Atwood Mobile Products LLC represents a shift in the RV supply chain landscape, merging two of the industry’s most established and respected suppliers.
The deal, still subject to government regulatory review, would effectively complement Dometic’s product portfolio while providing Atwood with further opportunities to expand its sights globally and sharpen its focus on the RV aftermarket.
“Atwood would certainly provide Dometic with a broader range of products, particularly with their proven market strength in gas-powered stoves, hot water heaters and furnaces, along with the Fan-Tastic Vent line and several complementary products,” Frank Marciano, president of Dometic Americas, told RVBUSINESS.com. “But it would also benefit other areas of our business, including service, support and training – areas where Atwood excels – while ultimately bringing a better value to the end users.”
If the transaction is approved, Dometic will be acquiring Atwood from South Lake, Texas-based Insight Equity, a private equity firm that purchased Atwood in 2007. Kip Ellis, vice president of sales and marketing for Atwood, said that his company had been testing the waters for several months before going into serious negotiations with Dometic.
“It was an arduous process, but we’re very excited about the opportunities presented by the acquisition, especially the global implications for Atwood,” Ellis said. “Dometic is very well established in Europe and Asia Pacific, regions where we are very light in terms of market presence. We are looking forward to creating a broader footprint for our products.”
Marciano and Ellis related that a key factor in putting the deal together was the common ground the companies share – business philosophies that emphasize intelligent, quality-focused product development backed by dedicated customer service.
“It came out in working with Atwood on this deal that the company has a lot of the same core values as Dometic,” Marciano said. “They are very progressive and innovative in terms of product and truly care about their customers and their reputation in the marketplace. It became apparent that it would be a very good fit for both companies.”
Ellis noted, “We complement each other well, both in terms of products and in the way that we do business. Our cultures line up nicely.”
Marciano indicated that once the sale was finalized, plans were to “initially have Atwood operate as a stand-alone division of Dometic.” He added, “With regards to what will happen over time, I just can’t comment on that. We will partner with Atwood’s management team and make the best decisions that will be positive for the industry and our stakeholders.”
In Tuesday’s announcement, Dometic reported that its global revenue, on a rolling 12 months, after the acquisition will amount to approximately $1.4 billion and the number of employees will increase to 7,200. Currently, Atwood has 775 workers with annual sales of $200 million.

According to a press release, this acquisition will complement and further diversify Dometic’s existing product offerings and strengthen the company’s global footprint. Atwood is a global provider in designing, engineering and manufacturing appliances and hardware for the RV, on-/off-Highway and marine industries for over 50 years.
“The key rationale behind this important acquisition is that it will expand our product range offered to our North American and global customers,” said Roger Johansson, president and CEO of Dometic Group. “With Atwood as part of our group, we will be able to offer high quality water heaters, ventilation technology, windows and doors, innovative furnaces, and more – products which have not been included in our present North American offering.”
Atwood’s primary markets are North America and Australia. The company has 775 employees and annual sales of approximately $200 million.

According to a press release, this is a limited time promotion directed at dealers in both the U.S. and Canada who purchase Atwood on-demand water heaters between June 1 and June 30.
The Atwood on-demand water heater has high output burners that regulate up to 50,000 Btu to handle a wide variety of ground water temperatures and provide a continuous flow of hot water. A user simply turns on the hot water and mixes in cold water until the desired temperature is reached.
These units are designed to fit in the rough openings for most brands and sizes of RVs with two available door options and an adapter plate to fill in any gaps for a 10- 12- or 16-gallon replacement. The Atwood on-demand water heaters are energy efficient and provide up to a 50% savings in LP over traditional water heaters.
Elkhart, Ind.-based Atwood Mobile Products LLC has announced its new line of power jacks, the Premier Performance Series.
According to a press release, the new models come in 3,000-pound and 4,000-pound tongue weight ratings and are available in either black or white. The Performance Series will replace the current Deluxe Series.
Atwood said the new jacks will “maintain the same high standards” of the Deluxe Series, while providing many additional features including a bubble level, brighter LED light, new aerodynamic outdoor grade cover, five-year limited warranty, full-color retail friendly box, and the Robofoot, a new self-retracting and extending 4,000-pound rated foot.

The product training portion will provide information to assist in the selling of the various items. The sessions will concentrate on features and benefits for the consumer, while providing tips to upsell the products.

Supplier Atwood Mobile Products LLC announced that it has opened a new distribution center in Elkhart, Ind. According to a press release, Atwood will host a 4 p.m grand opening today (Oct. 22) at the new facility, located at 2040 Toledo Rd.
Atwood’s new distribution center provides an additional 50% of square feet over the previous facility. The new warehouse location will also allow Atwood to better serve its local OEM customers with faster response times as well as increased inventory and product availability to all customers.

Atwood Mobile Products LLC announced that its On-Demand Water Heater (ODWH) was named the 2013 Product of the Year runner-up at the Recreational Vehicle Aftermarket Association (RVAA) Executive Conference in Boston.
According to a press release, the Product of the Year is voted on by a panel of select dealer and distributor judges and the ODWH received the highest voting of any appliance. Awards were presented during a luncheon on Aug. 14.

Elkhart, Ind.-based supplier Atwood Mobile Products LLC announced today (July 18) that it has closed on a transaction to acquire Aircommand, a privately held company headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia from the Henshall family. According to a press release, Aircommand is a world market leader in mobile air-conditioning, selling to the RV and specialty vehicle markets worldwide, particularly in Australia, North America and Europe.

Adams brings over 27 years industry experience, most recently serving as an outside sales consultant for NTP Distribution Inc.
