Indiana Consolidation Made Sense for Atwood

December 12, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Elkhart, Ind.-based Atwood Mobile Products LLC will add 132 new jobs in Elkhart by 2015. According to a report by the South Bend Tribune, some of those new jobs already have been filled and many more will be in 2013, said Kip Ellis, vice president of sales and marketing for Atwood.

As reported yesterday by RVBUSINESS.com, Atwood Mobile Products was among nine companies announcing more than 2,500 jobs coming to Indiana over the next few years during an event Tuesday (Dec. 11) in Indianapolis.

Atwood said it will invest $5.9 million to consolidate manufacturing operations from its Fan-Tastic Vent subsidiary in Imlay City, Mich., and distribution and warehousing operations from Tennessee and other locations to Elkhart County.

Atwood Mobile Products, a component supplier, already has 368 employees at four sites in Elkhart. It has 700 employees nationwide.

“We’re an RV-oriented company,” Ellis said in a phone interview. “It’s a good portion of what we do. Our customer base being located here, our manufacturing capability here, these products are a good fit for some of the capacities that we have in the area.”

“Atwood has seen tremendous growth the last few years, particularly in our recreational vehicle and specialty vehicle markets,” said Tim Stephens, president of Atwood Mobile Products in a news release by the Economic Development Corp. of Elkhart County.

The business climate in Indiana once again played a role, as did incentives, said Ellis and Stephens.

Fan-Tastic Vent’s Relocation ‘Strictly Business’

September 20, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

It isn’t about the Michigan’s economy. Nor the work force, or the Imlay City area.

As reported by the Tri-City Times, it’s strictly business behind Fan-Tastic Vent’s move from its longtime location in Imlay City, says Kip Ellis, vice president of sales and marketing for parent Atwood Mobile Products LLC.

After acquiring the company in the fall of 2010, Atwood has decided to move Fan-Tastic’s operations to its home base in Indiana. Ellis says the transition to facilities in Elkhart, Ind., is expected to take place within 60 or so days.

“Most of our customer base on the OEM side is located in the Elkhart area and the move was made to work more closely with our customers, which is something we have always been mindful of,” Ellis says.

Offers have been extended to most current employees, Ellis added, including the entire direct labor source. Because the transition is in the works, Ellis says he has no current numbers regarding employees planning to make the move.

Ellis says Atwood had a positive experience in the area, and the move to Elkhart is simply to consolidate operations.

“The people were very supportive of us and the business,” Ellis says. “Fan-Tastic Vent has a long history (in the area). We have a good work force, the work ethic is admirable and we’re pleased despite the present challenges.”

Ellis says Fan-Tastic Vent has enjoyed a solid presence in the RV industry with well-respected products and Atwood is pleased to continue that tradition.

Atwood Helium Reefer Used in Keystone Lines

Atwood Helium Refrigerators

Atwood Mobile Products LLC recently launched the industry’s only RV refrigerator that utilizes helium in the cooling system and an integrated tilt sensor.

According to a press release, the Atwood Helium Refrigerator is now standard equipment in several Keystone RV Co. towable products, including the Bullet, Passport and Hornet brands. The Helium Refrigerator is also available in the aftermarket through many of the major distributors around the country.

As the name suggests, helium gas has replaced hydrogen that is traditionally found in gas absorption refrigerators. The Elkhart, Ind.-based supplier said that helium allows the cooling system to run at a lower temperature, minimizing stress that can be caused by using a traditional gas absorption refrigerator. An exclusive integrated tilt sensor also provides a visual cue to the consumer showing if the refrigerator is in an “out-of-level situation.”

Atwood Helium Refrigerators are available in 7- and 8-cubic-foot class sizes. While both models provide the largest cubic foot of storage in their class, Atwood Helium Refrigerators are designed to fit other brands’ traditional 6- and 8-cubic-foot cabinet openings.

Atwood said the refrigerators also boast several standard upscale features including built-in door ajar alarm, designer blue crisper bins and LED lights, intuitive door handles and a modern display panel.
