Cikira RV LLC, Sturgis, Mich., has redesigned the year-old Retro-Lite lightweight travel trailer, incorporating aluminum sidewalls — rather than fiberglass — mounted on a wraparound composite substrate. The company also dropped many of the unit’s European features. ”The product that we introduced as the original Retro-Lite was very high end,” said Cikira President Alan Carter. ”It was a weight leader. But the dealers were asking for similar function in a unit with a lower cost.” Glass has replaced polycarbonate in the windows on the 2010 Retro-Lite which no longer is equipped standard with appliances nor air conditioning. ”We reduced the base price from $18,000 to $12,000,” Carter said. ”It is very spartan. When you go back and look at the old campers, that was the style.” Available in two 16-foot floorplans, Retro-Lite features a dry weight of 1,800 pounds, which is towable by most SUVs and crossovers. The European package still is available as an option.
