Nexus RV LLC, a factory-direct manufacturer of Class C, Super C and Class B+ motorhomes based in Elkhart, Ind., announced another location for a factory showroom. Nexus RV will have products on display in Fort Worth, Texas, and it plans to keep growing locations in addition to its current remote facilities in Clearwater, Fla., and Temecula, Calif..

“Our strategy to give customers an opportunity to touch and feel our products is working”, said Claude Donati, president and co-founder of the company, which started in 2010. “We have been able to gain many customers through our factory-direct showroom in Temecula, Calif. The customers appreciate the low-pressure, leisurely experience they have when they enter our showroom. Our sales staff remotely guides the customers through the products and answers any product questions.”

Donati said Nexus RV has taken a page out of Tesla Motors Inc.’s approach by offering strategically located showrooms throughout the country.

According to Nexus, they plan to open an additional five showrooms over the next year. “The future locations for those showrooms will be in markets where our customers would support the investment,” explained Dave Middleton, vice president and co-founder.

“We will have our products in Fort Worth by the end of September,“ said Middleton.

RV Warrior Co., a newly formed RV manufacturer of toy hauler travel trailers and fifth-wheels under the Weekend Warrior badge, announced the appointment of Claude Donati to the position of CEO.

Donati, a 20-year veteran of the RV industry, will oversee the operational and manufacturing aspects of the company while assisting Brandon Ambris, president of RV Warrior, in the sales and marketing of the legendary brand.

“Brandon, along with partner Frank Barouti, have developed the perfect plan with their toy hauler design based on their experience in selling thousands of toy haulers over the years,” Donati said in a press release. “It will be my role to support that effort with a smooth administrative and manufacturing organization.”

RV Warrior is currently leasing a production and office area from Elkhart, Ind.-based Nexus RV, where Donati is currently the co-founder and president. “There is a nice synergy between Nexus RV and RV Warrior,” Donati said. “As the Weekend Warrior product was being prototyped and the design was being developed, it is clear there is a huge opportunity for this product to immediately become the leader in its product segment.”

He added, “We are going to begin production next week while we already have signed up several large dealers throughout the U.S. Over the next week we will be announcing some key players that will oversee the sales and marketing which will add to our already large backlog.”

RV Warriorwill be producing 20- to 28-foot laminated toy haulers. The company plans to produce fifth-wheels within a year.

Elkhart Site in Running for Startup Nexus RVs

In a market that’s been somewhat limited for U.S. motorhome builders, startup minimotorhome manufacturer Nexus RVs LLC will begin hiring key personnel within the next few weeks and plans to produce a prototype unit to display at the Florida RV SuperShow in mid-January.

”That way, we can get into the biggest show of the year and set the tone,” said Nexus President Claude Donati, who resigned in mid-June as vice president of motorized for Gulf Stream Coach Inc. to form his own company.

Donati, who has temporarily located Nexus’ corporate headquarters in the University of Notre Dame’s Innovation Park, said the Elkhart City Council on Monday will consider tax abatement on a 109,000-square-foot production facility in an industrial park at Indiana 19 and the Indiana Toll Road on the north side of Elkhart.

”That doesn’t mean that we’ve selected that property,” Donati said, adding that the Nexus also is considering space in the Edwardsburg, Mich., area, about two miles north of the Indiana state line.

”Our hope is to be in Elkhart, but we also are looking in the southern Michigan — in the area where Georgie Boy was — which has a solid workforce,” he reported. ”And we want to stay close enough to the vendors.”

The decision on where to put Nexus’ plant will be determined by which location makes the best sense financially, Donati said.

In a filing with the Elkhart City Council, Mayor Dick Moore recommends that Nexus receive abatement for five years on $1 million in equipment, saving the company about $38,600. The mayor said the average pay for Nexus’ workers will be about $22 an hour.

Nexus’ application for abatement filed Sept. 21 says the company anticipates annual sales of $20 million, and that a second phase will include building a destination RV campground.

Initially, Nexus will assemble standard and ”B-plus-style” Class C motorhomes on Ford chassis.

”We think we really understand that market, and the tooling costs are a little less expensive than if we were manufacturing a full-blown Class A,” Donati said. ”It’s a little more complicated to get into that segment.”

Donati said that by the end of October Nexus will hire a plant manager, engineer, purchasing agent and controller. ”Shortly after that, we will bring in key leaders on the production line,” he said.

The company expects to hire 50 people in its first year and be in production by late winter.

”We have some product design stuff that will be different than what is out there now,” Donati said. ”We are going to make sure that every inch of the floorplan is used properly.”

Donati anticipates Nexus pursuing steady, controlled growth. ”We won’t be a high-volume producer right away,” he said.

Newly formed motorhome manufacturer Nexus RV announced it has temporarily located its corporate offices in Innovation Park at the University of Notre Dame in Northern Indiana.

The company plans to produce motorhomes in Northern Indiana or Southern Michigan, according to a news release.

“As we finalize many of the details in our initial phase, Innovation Park offers many great resources,” said Claude Donati, president.  “The environment here is conducive for a thorough and professional approach to make many of the important decisions a new company has to make.”

Donati, formerly vice president of the motorized division at Gulf Stream Coach Inc., in nearby Nappanee, Ind, added,  “It is our plan to determine the location of our production campus within the next 60 days. We are analyzing several facilities to assure our needs will be met not only for our initial phase but as we grow. Many traditional sites are being reviewed but we are also looking at those areas where the community is eager to create tax revenue.”

Donati announced his resignation from Gulf Stream in mid-June.

“It is with great excitement and ambition I resign my post as the vice president of the motorized division of Gulf Stream Coach,” Donati said in response to RVBUSINESS.com’s inquiry. “I appreciate the 15 years that I worked at Gulf Stream and will miss the many employees that I worked with over the years. I would like to especially thank (Motorized Division President) Brian Shea for the many years of opportunity he provided for me and my family.

“As for my future,” Donati continued, “it is my hope and expectation to be part of a company in the RV industry. I will rely on my many years in manufacturing and my vast knowledge of the business as well as the many relationships I was fortunate enough to establish to create a business that will allow me to contribute to the local economy and to remain an active member of the RV community.”
