RVDA Moves Up DSI Survey Launch to April 26

DSI LOGO no date small webThe board of directors of the Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association (RVDA) voted during its strategic planning meeting March 2-3 to launch the Dealer Satisfaction Index (DSI) survey earlier this year, according to a story in the current online issue of RVDA’s RV Executive Today.

The board passed the following motion unanimously: “Based upon the positive trend in a majority of manufacturers’ DSI scores we will postpone the publication of full DSI results to the industry, and that Brand Committee chairmen will receive full DSI reports on their individual brand in time to present them during Brand Committee meetings at the 2010 RV Dealers International Convention/Expo.”

The distribution of DSI questionnaires to dealers will begin April 26 and the deadline for responding is July 1.

The 2010 RV Dealers International Convention/Expo will take place Oct. 4-8 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.

RVDA’s analysis of the most recent DSI survey indicated progress in some areas critical to the Go RVing Coalition’s Committee on Excellence (COE), particularly in the towable sector’s product quality. Improvement also occurred in the areas of overall communications and dealership warranty support.

Towable manufacturers improved their product quality/reliability by 2.5% in the 2009 survey compared to 2008. One towable manufacturer showed a 30% increase in product quality. There was a 2% increase in towable manufacturers’ communications efforts. One towable manufacturer scored a 16% increase. Dealership warranty support improved by 1%, and one towable manufacturer posted a 7% improvement.

Twenty-five manufacturers/brands earned year-over-year increases in the overall DSI scores between 2008 and 2009, while 17 brands/manufacturers declined. The manufacturers/brands earning increases represent approximately 54% of both the towable and motorhome retail markets.

Replacement parts availability and industrywide training are two other areas of critical importance to the COE, and towable manufacturers, on average, scored increases in all five areas.

RVAA Sees Renewed Interest in Upcoming Conference

rvanow_logoSixteen distributors and 70 suppliers — an increase of 15% over last year — have registered for next week’s Recreation Vehicle Aftermarket Association’s (RVAA) Annual Executive Conference. The premier RV aftermarket event takes place Tuesday (Aug. 4) through Friday at the Chase Park Plaza hotel in St. Louis.

”I think the increased registration says that the aftermarket is going pretty well,” said Carl Etshied, executive director of the 112-member organization that includes distributors, suppliers and manufacturers’ agents. ”We walked out of our meeting last year just as the wheels were coming off the whole credit thing thinking that this year was going to be a bad year.

”But from what my members are telling me, over the last four or five months, they’ve seen things pick up,” Etshied added. ”I talked to one distributor who had a record month last month. That’s not across-the-board. Overall, it’s been a tough year. But the attitudes of our members are incredibly optimistic.”

The RVAA conference is unique in that it allows suppliers to sit down one-on-one for up to 40 minutes with distributors to pitch products and ideas. ”The format of our meetings is not just people sitting in the audience and listening to someone talk for half an hour,” Etshied said.

Etshied, of course, is pleased by the increased registration. ”This is a year that they could have easily just phoned it in and forgot about the conference,” he said. ”Everybody’s cutting back on spending and travel budgets have been cut, but this is one event that many of our members thought they couldn’t afford to miss.”

Also during the conference, RVAA will present awards to a dozen members who have adopted ”best practices” suggested in RVAA’s new Aftermarket Efficiency Program in the areas of parts, sales and education.

”As a small association we’re pleased that we’ve been able to get some of our members to recognize the importance of best practices,” Etshied said. 

The creation of the efficiency program was the result of the Go RVing Coalition’s Committee on Excellence quality task forces, Etshied said.
