Three former owners of Elkhart, Ind.-based Hy-Line Enterprises Inc. have repurchased the assets of the troubled company and have resumed production under a new business name.

The new owners bought back machinery and equipment, work in progress and inventory and have named their company H L Enterprise Inc.

The trio – Peggy Flager, Randy Hoff and Charles Ragland – completed the acquisition on Dec. 24 through Texas Capital Bank of certain assets of Hy-Line Enterprises Holdings LLC from Evolve Capital, a private equity venture capital firm based in Dallas, Texas.

The Texas firm had purchased the company from the Elkhart group in May 2006.

Flager, one of the original founders, is president, while Hoff is secretary-treasurer and Ragland is in charge of production.

They have resumed limited production at the former Hy-Line factory complex at 21674 Beck Drive on the east side of Elkhart.

They and a production crew of 32 workers are concentrating on building 8-foot-wide park trailers but will also manufacture travel trailers and fifth-wheels while retaining the Hy-Line, Willow Creek, Premier and Pine Creek brand names. They also are building a Georgian Bay park trailer for Canadian customers.

Their park trailers are somewhat similar to the traditional Hy-Line product lines, but with many new upgrades, Hoff explained. The triple slide trailers feature island kitchens, Corian countertops, thermopane patio doors, cherry wood cabinets and all-tinted windows.

“Most of what we’re doing now is dictated by the market,” Hoff said. “A lot of the interiors are more plush and there is more of a residential appeal in construction. We also went to a higher ceiling. It’s no longer a travel trailer (84-inch) ceiling. Now it’s a 96-inch ceiling.”

The new owners are re-establishing ties to traditional suppliers and rebuilding their dealer body, which had earlier grown to 25 states but had declined in recent years. “We’re doing a lot of damage control from the previous owners,” Hoff said, without elaborating. “We didn’t buy the liabilities, but we’re working with the dealer base and customers in trying to restore their confidence.”

H L Enterprise also has retained its exclusive relationship to provide park trailers to Lake Rudolph Campground & RV Resort in Santa Claus, Ind., where more than 200 Hy-Line trailers have been placed in recent years.

H L Enterprise also has become an international park trailer builder with sales in England and Australia and is looking to penetrate the emerging Chinese market.

Hoff says the company hopes to sell some park trailers in China, with an eye to eventually building them there, although that is not an immediate option.
