“Diamond Dan” Esch is the talk of the town in Show Low, Ariz., especially at the beautiful Juniper Ridge RV Resort. True to his nickname, he’s donated the sparkling hole-in-one prize for the upcoming Juniper Ridge 9-Hole Golf Tournament, the White Mountain Independent reported.
But we’re not talking about a shiny new automobile — he’s donated a brand new 2010 Deluxe E8400 Chariot Eagle recreational park trailer, valued at more than $50,000. And, this isn’t just any park model. It has nine-foot-high ceilings, almost 400 square feet of living space, with a washer and dryer, dishwasher, microwave, with a fancy glass stovetop and all cherry wood cabinets.
The private Juniper Ridge golf course, which had limited space for a championship layout, is a replica of the 18-hole Cayman Course that was created by Jack Nicklaus in the Cayman Islands,
Engineers designed a special hollow Cayman golf ball for play at Juniper Ridge, and has “pimples instead of dimples.” Cayman balls travel about two-thirds the distance of a regular golf ball, hence a higher par hole in a shorter distance. This affords the golfer an opportunity for a full swing, using various clubs.
The quaint 18-hole Cayman course at Juniper Ridge plays to a par 66 with the white (men) tee boxes measuring a total of 2,574 yards and the red (ladies) measuring 2,266 yards. Golfers may also play regular par-3 with a regular golfball on the same course measuring 2,077 yards from yellow tee boxes only.
The golf tournament sponsored by Blue Diamond Home & RV benefits the Juniper Ridge Resort Golf Committee which is managed by the resort homeowners association.
“Diamond Dan” Esch, owner of Blue Diamond Home & RV, with the main sales lot located in Wagon Wheel, has been associated with Juniper Ridge since 1987. He has seen the age 55-plus community grow and develop over three subsequent bankruptcies with the homeowners now managing the resort.
He said, “Ike Issacson was the last to own the resort and he really did a fabulous job with the community. He held onto it for a long time and really kept it up.”
“It is the nicest RV park in all of northern Arizona and is truly the jewel of the White Mountains,” Esch added.
And, Esch wasn’t exaggerating. The greens and surrounding property are absolutely breathtaking. The course is in top condition and ready for a field of 72 golfers who teed off today (Aug. 27).
When asked if he was nervous about somebody winning the beautiful home, Esch chuckled, and said, “I’ve done my home work and do you know, the odds of someone winning that park model are about one in 750,000 but hey, it’s insured with the National Golfing Hole-in-One Association, so I hope someone does win it!” Another member of the resort, Bob Arp, added that only one out of every 34,000 golfers ever achieve hitting a hole-in-one during their golfing lifetime.
“We’re a golfing community here at Juniper Ridge,” Sather said. “There’s something going on every day for our golfers from May through September.”
In addition to golf, Juniper Ridge offers croquet, a swimming pool, billiards room, clubhouse, weight room, laundry facility, and beauty/barber shop. Of the more than 500 home sites, there are about 70 for sale by the partnership with another dozen or so resales.
Sather said, “We opened in 1985 and now 25 years later, some of our residents have passed away. That leaves openings and resales for new residents to move-in.”
