As the result of a light-related electricity reduction at its Wausau, Wis., facility, King’s Campers has received Orion Energy Systems’ Environmental Stewardship Award.
Orion presents the award to companies that achieve significant environmental benefits through the use of Orion’s energy-efficient technology, according to a news release.
King’s Campers replaced 115 high-intensity discharge (HID) light fixtures with Orion’s Compact Modular, high-intensity fluorescent (HIF) technology.
As a result of the lighting change, King’s Campers is expected to cut its light-related electricity costs by 71% — from an annual $11,598 to $3,301.
In addition to the cost savings come significant environmental benefits, as King’s Campers drastically reduces the amount of harmful, greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere.
The lighting change is projected to reduce light-related electricity consumption by 71%, from an annual 104,491 kilowatt-hours (kWh) to 29,748 kWh.
As a result of the decreased energy consumption at King’s Campers, the company is helping decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 987 tons during the lifecycle of Orion’s high-efficiency fixtures, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The reductions are the air-scrubbing equivalent of a 14-acre forest or removing 12 cars from the road. It is also the equivalent of saving 6,170 gallons of gasoline a year, according to the EPA.
“Four years ago we updated our lighting fixtures to the most energy efficient models available at the time,” said Ron Gajewski, general manager of King’s Campers. “I never imagined that a few years later we could reduce our emissions and energy costs as well as we can today. I feel very proud to help the environment. I’m amazed at the numbers when I see them. But I’m even more amazed at the amount of light our new Apollo solar light pipes provide just from natural day light — no electricity required. We’ve had lots of folks stop in who don’t believe these light pipes are just a new type of skylight. We all joke that we may have to wear our sunglasses while indoors during the summer.”
The environmental and cost benefits to King’s Campers are possible because of Orion’s patented, high-efficiency technology that reduces light-related electricity use by 50% while producing 50% more light than the industry standard high-intensity discharge lights. Orion’s technology also is easy to install and maintain.
King’s Campers has been family owned and operated since 1990. Specializing in servicing and selling only campers and motor homes, King’s Campers has gained national respect as one of the foremost RV dealerships in both the U.S. and Canada and has won numerous awards for outstanding customer service. King’s Campers, Wausau, Wis., has announced that all inventory tags will now have a two-dimensional scanable code printed on each tag. This code has been put in place to help customers with “smart phones” to access more detailed information about the RV they are interested in through a free QR Reader application, according to a news release.
“Technology is taking our world in fantastic new directions. We are now able to reach our customers at all times of the day or night whether or not we are closed,” said Janice Skidmore, King’s Campers’ brand manager. “It’s very easy to do: a customer with a ‘smart phone’ can scan a code directly from the tag on the RV he or she is interested in. This code will direct the customer straight to that RV as it is posted on King’s Campers’ website. Thus the customer can read detailed information about that camper, see many photos of that camper, and can also view a drawing of the floor plan. This will help the customer who visited our lot during non-business hours; he or she will be able to find out pertinent information even if a sales team member is not present.”
John Gajewski, King’s Campers’ sales manager, added, “At King’s Campers, we always aim to give the highest level of care possible at all times. This free application is just one more way for us to do the best job we can.”
The QR Reader application is a free download that is also free to use and can be found on several websites relating to “smart phones.” One of these codes accompanies this story.

Kings Campers, Wausau, Wis., is KZRV LP’s Top Dealer for the Mid Central Region for 2010.
The award was presented to King’s Campers President Ron Gajewski during a dinner this week at KZ RV’s annual Dealer Open House at KZ’s manufacturing plant and headquarters located in Shipshewana, Ind.
“This honor truly reflects all of the hard work King’s Campers staff does on a day to day basis,” said Gajewski. “From the moment the customer arrives until they drive off the lot with their new camper, King’s Campers staff works diligently to be kind, courteous and helpful. The award also reflects KZ’s efforts to find innovative new ways to keep weight down while still maintaining space. The Durango 1500 half-ton-towable series is a perfect example; several of the floor plans have two slide outs, and they’re beautiful inside, but they’re still light weight. KZ’s Sportsmen Classic mini-van-towable travel trailers are another example of great innovation by meeting current customer demands.”

He added, “I’m also enjoying the fact that I still deal with the original founder of the company, Daryl Zook. We go back a lot of years in this industry. This kind of experience is invaluable when it comes to running a lean ship while not scrimping on quality or customer care.”
King’s Campers has been locally owned and operated since 1990.
King’s Campers in Wausau, Wis., is marking the company’s 20th anniversary this year.
Family owned and operated by Ron, Mike and Mark Gajewski and Les Stankowski, King’s Campers has become north central Wisconsin’s leading dealer in the RV sales and service industry, according to a news release.
These families together forged a company that has become synonymous with above-and-beyond customer care, dedication, honesty and integrity.
The Gajewskis and Stankowskis are hard working and dedicated Wausau families that have taken a very small company originally established in 1967 by Ron Gajewski (then turned over to Roger King in 1972) located on Wausau’s west side to solid growth since they re-purchased the business in 1990.
Their “can do” approach to all things work related brought them to a turning point within five years of ownership; relocation. The families recognized the Wausau area’s future population development and took the innovative step of relocating the business to what was once an abandoned building located at 5507 Lilac Ave, Wausau in 1995. This location was seen by King’s Campers owners as a property that would provide them with the utmost visibility and also would provide the opportunity for expansion to better serve a growing population.
As a result of this vision and drive, King’s Campers now covers five acres with new and pre-owned products and includes 12 service bays to repair or service any make or model RV. Approximately 40% of sales come from out-of-state customers.
Ron Gajewski, general manager for King’s Campers, stated, “Reaching this milestone in our company’s history is a fantastic achievement. Twenty years have gone by so quickly, and yet at the same time, it feels like forever. So many things have happened in those years. But truly the best part is the customers. I’ve met so many wonderful people through this job. It’s just been a wonderful experience. I’m an engineer by trade and a sales person by choice because I really enjoy working with and meeting folks.”
“This anniversary is a true testament to our owners and staff, “ John Gajewski, sales manager added. “I truly appreciate all of them. They’ve all worked together to make this company what it is today. We all should be very proud of all the achievements King’s Campers has earned over the years. In looking ahead, we can easily look back to see what we’ve done right and use that experience to help us improve all aspects of our operation, to include continued partnering with quality manufacturers, and providing above-and-beyond service.”
King’s Campers sells KZ, Open Range, Salem, Tiffin and Winnebago RVs and services all RV makes and models.
King’s Campers was named an RVB Top 50 Dealer for 2008-2009.
