Custom motor coach manufacturer Liberty Coach will be conducting a cross-country tour this year, marking the Stuart, Fla.-based company’s 40th anniversary.
“We have numerous rallies and shows scheduled between now and the end of the year,” said Liberty Vice President Frank Konigseder in a press release. “That means we’ll have at least one coach on the road constantly. We’ll also talk to dozens of coach owners – of both Liberty models and our competitors – and countless automotive, design and engineering experts to get feedback on our latest motor coach models, new floorplans and features, and suggestions for improvements.”
As sons of company founders Frank Sr. and Jeanne Konigseder, Frank Jr. and his brother Kurt have been working in the custom coach business literally as long as there has been a business. “There really wasn’t a ‘motor coach industry’ when they started,” Frank Konigseder said about his parents. “Their goal was to fill what they saw as the need for a high quality, problem-free motor home, which simply didn’t exist at the time.
“At first, they gutted old buses and redid the interiors,” he continued, “maybe adding a tube television set and an AM/FM radio.” Their product evolved quickly from there, the biggest step coming in 1978 when Liberty began its long-standing partnership with a Canadian coach shell manufacturer Prevost to take the luxury motor coach market to a higher level.
“Every summer is like a traveling road show, and this year is no exception,” Konigseder said. The rallies, he says, are one of the most important aspects of the business, not just in terms of sales, but for research and development, as well. “To find out what people want in a coach, you have to go where they are. Ask them questions, listen to their answers, and keep your mind as open as your ears.”
Stops on the company’s 40th Anniversary Tour included: the Royale Coach Club Spring Rally in Myrtle Beach, S.C., April 30-May 5, and the Prevost Prouds Rally at the New Orleans JazzFest, May 2-6.
