For the fourth straight month, year-over-year retail sales of towable RVs were flat – up just 1.6% in May – while year-over-year registrations for the first five months rose 6.8%. January was the last month that showed a marked increase from the year prior, posting a 13.5% gain.
According to the latest report from Statistical Surveys Inc., May results were:
• Sales for the high-volume travel trailer sector increased 4.6% in May and 9.2% year-to-date.
• Fifth-wheel registrations edged down 1.2% for the month and were up 4.4% through May.
• Folding camping trailer sales declined 13.5% in May and 5.9% year-to-date.
• May park model sales were down 8.5% and 1.9% for the first five months.
Thor Industries Inc. remained the towable sales leader year-to-date with a 37% market share, followed by Forest River Inc. at 21.2% and Jayco Inc. with a 11.9% share.
By segment for the first five months, Thor was No. 1 in travel trailers with a 33.6% share, fifth-wheels with a commanding 54.4% share and park models with a 20.3% share.
Forest River was the folding camping trailer leader through May with a 34% share.
