A fleet of recreational vehicles and their owners were calling the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Du Quoin home Sunday (June 27).
The Fleetwood MotorHome Association’s national rally descended on the fairgrounds over the weekend, and Fleetwood RV owners from across the United States and Canada made the cross-country trip to attend, The Southern Illinoisan, Carbondale, reported. The rally ends Wednesday.
“We have about 400 motorhomes here, which means more than 800 people. There are quite a few children along also,” said Dawn Fann, an event marketing manager for Fleetwood RV Inc.
“It’s our way to interact with our customer base,” Fann said, adding that the rally is an opportunity for Fleetwood owners to meet, while also giving company representatives the chance to mingle with owners. “The whole idea is getting everyone together, getting feedback and the fellowship of having an RV.”
Fleetwood sales associates also had new motorhomes for sale or trade on display in the Southern Illinois Center, and many vendors were on site offering RV services and accessories.
Cheryle Hill, a representative of Outdoor Resorts of America, was promoting her company’s chain of luxury RV parks. She thought the rally was well-attended, but many people were simply enjoying a relaxing weekend without taking advantage of the services offered.
“The show is kind of quiet right now, hopefully it will pick up later on,” Hill said.
Linda and Al Largent of Georgetown, Texas, attended a rally for a different motorhome manufacturer in Du Quoin years ago and decided to return this year for the Fleetwood rally.
“We just bought a new Fleetwood, so here we are,” Linda Largent said. The two were enjoying meeting other Fleetwood owners and were also taking advantage of vendor discounts. “After this we’re heading for home. Then we’re off to Oregon, Washington and up through Canada.”
“We spend about a third of our time on the road, more if we’re lucky,” her husband added.
Many other motorhome manufacturers hold similar rallies across the country, Fann said. Fleetwood held its first national rally last year in Gillette, Wyo., and also hosted local rallies in Florida and California. Du Quoin was selected as this year’s location because of the attractive grounds, utility hook-ups and convenient location in the middle of the country.
