Hampden Township officials in Cumberland County weren’t happy when they spotted 17 RVs sitting in front of the Holiday Inn West along the Carlisle Pike in Harrisburg, Pa., according to WHTM-TV, Harrisburg.

The RVs were brought in so the hotel could meet the room requirements for a resort casino license.

The township wants them removed.

“Our ordinance does not provide for sort of a permanent parking facility for these RVs,” said Al Bienstock, president of the Hampden Township commissioners. “It’s an eyesore. It’s not a lot that’s devoted to selling RVs. It’s certainly not an RV park.”

Township officials met with representatives of Penn Harris Gaming, the casino’s developer, on Tuesday. The company will present an alternate plan for the RVs in the coming days. In the meantime, the trailers have been moved from the front of the hotel to the back.

Penn Harris Gaming needs the RVs to boost the number of rooms at the Holiday Inn. Applicants for a resort casino license must have a minimum of 275 rooms. The Holiday Inn West has only 238.

“In order to meet the application requirements they need those there, in effect, as rooms,” said Bienstock. “But certainly they’re not hooked up to water or sewage or anything else.”

If Penn Harris does come up with an acceptable plan for keeping the RVs at the hotel, it still may not be enough to be granted a casino license.

That’s up to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to decide, as part of the lengthy application process.

“Eligibility hearings may be part of the whole process,” said Board spokesman Doug Harbach. “The review of the application, the background investigations, the public input hearings which would be held in the municipality, all those things are part of the process.”

Harbach could not say if RVs qualify as hotel rooms.

A spokesman for Penn Harris Gaming did not return calls from abc27 News.
