Pilot Flying J Dealing With Fraud Allegations

April 23, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

Pilot Flying J CEO Jimmy Haslam III said Monday (April 22) the truck-stop giant has put some of its sales team on administrative leave and is reviewing all contracts with trucking companies amid allegations its employees defrauded customers on diesel-fuel rebates.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Pilot, a company well known to the RVing community, also will scrap manually processed contracts by the end of June and hire a chief compliance officer and outside special investigator in the coming weeks to address allegations of wrongdoing, Haslam said in a statement delivered to reporters at company headquarters in Knoxville, Tenn. The allegations were raised by a current employee and a former employee, among others, according to the Federal Bureau Investigation (FBI).

The moves follow a raid of Pilot’s offices last week by the FBI and Internal Revenue Service as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. A 120-page affidavit unsealed in federal court last Thursday alleges employees withheld discounts from customers to boost company profits and their own sales commissions. No one has been arrested.

Haslam reiterated Monday that Pilot believes the federal investigation is focused on “a narrow slice” of the business in which diesel-fuel rebates are manually calculated and paid to “a relatively small number” of the company’s 3,300 trucking-company customers.

But he said he is “embarrassed” by allegations of wrongdoing at the privately held truck-stop chain. The chain is North America’s largest, with more than 500 locations. “I more than anyone understand the damage done to our reputation,” Haslam told reporters. He declined to take questions, citing the federal investigation.

Good Sam Club Offering Pilot Flying J Discount

January 5, 2012 by · 7 Comments

The Good Sam Club is offering members an exclusive money-saving benefit with the launch of the Pilot Flying J RV Plus Card, according to a press release.

Beginning in 2012, Good Sam Club members can apply for the discount card which will allow them to save on each gallon of gasoline and diesel fuel purchased; 10 cents per gallon on bulk propane purchased, and 50% on holding tank dump station charges at all applicable Pilot Flying J locations across the United States. The recent decision to combine the former Camping World President’s Club and the Good Sam Club into a newly-expanded, upgraded club was a key element in the club’s partnering with Pilot Flying J.

“The extra leverage of our combined member numbers helped make the Pilot Flying J discount possible,” said Good Sam Chairman and CEO Marcus Lemonis. “Our members have been asking for this benefit for some time, and it is one that we are especially happy to make available to them.

“The price of fuel represents the single biggest expense in most of our budgets as we enjoy the RV lifestyle. Securing discounts on a commodity like fuel is not easy. Finding a provider who has a nationwide network of locations and the facilities to properly serve our members is even more challenging.”

Along with savings on gasoline, diesel, propane and dump services, Pilot Flying J locations offer a wide array of conveniences and services well-suited for RV travelers, including dedicated RV fuel lanes, convenience stores, on-site restaurants, safety and a clean environment for families. As part of the exclusive new program for Good Sam members the companies have co-produced an RV Travel Guide which lists all the participating Pilot Flying J locations and the RV specific services available to members at each location.

RVC Outdoor, Pilot Flying J Form Partnership

May 17, 2011 by · 2 Comments

RVC Outdoor Destinations announced today that it has formed a marketing alliance with Knoxville, Tennessee based Pilot Flying J – the largest retail operator of travel centers in North America.

According to a report on Examiner.com, as part of the program RVC is helping their guests sign up for the Pilot Flying J rewards program – a free rewards program for RVers.

“We wanted to partner with Pilot Flying J not only because they are a top-rated company, but also because we feel the pain of the rising gas prices, especially for RV travelers,” said Yale Spina, RVC vice president and director of operations.

RVC is providing guests with a membership pack that includes a Pilot Flying J frequent fueler advantage card plus an RV travel guide in an effort to keep RVers on the open road. The frequent fueler card provides discounts on gasoline, diesel, propane fuel and dumping fees at over 550 participating Pilot Flying J locations. The nationwide travel guide shows the location of participating Pilot Flying J travel centers along with the facilities offered at those locations; like restaurants, RV parking, RV dump station and bulk propane.

Existing members of the Flying J Real Value rewards program can continue to use their old loyalty card but will need to register their information at the frequent fueler advantage website. Registration brings additional member-only benefits including travel center discount coupons that can be used on in-store merchandise or in Pilot Flying J restaurants. More importantly, the new loyalty card will allow RVers to use the “Pump Start” program in the Pilot Flying J truck diesel lanes.

After RVers have accrued 500 gallons of fuel, you will be able to unlock Pump Start to turn on the pump just by swiping your loyalty card.  After registering your card, visit any Pilot or Flying J front desk to sign up for Pump Start. All you need to do is present your driver’s license to the cashier along with your Frequent Fueler Advantage card.

“Our new website is designed with all customers in mind – professional drivers, RV owners, fleet operators, families planning road trips or people living in one of the hundreds of communities that Pilot Flying J serves,” said Jimmy Haslam, president and CEO of Pilot Flying J.

Turn-by-turn directions from starting point to destination, including stops at Pilot Flying J to refuel and refresh, can be printed from the site.

“The site provides easy-to-use tools and information that help our customers find us, get connected with us, pick up the quality products and services they need and get back on the road,” Haslam said. “And, our new mobile site provides the same access from their smartphones to information and services they might need away from home.”
